In a similar vein to last week’s Tips and Tricks, I’d like to talk to you about designing. Often times, someone wants to design, but doesn’t know how to start. There’s tons of things you can use as a jumping off point to get into the designing process.

Places to start from: - A book – like the Reader’s Digest Complete Book of Needlework (ISBN 0-89577-059-8), good because it shows you stitch techniques, and very loose design ideas. - Sewing patterns – these will show you the size and shape your finished piece need to be. Pick a pretty stitch or a comfy yarn and make your pieces. You do need to keep bulk of fabric in mind with this. - A favorite pattern – if you’ve got a pattern you love, try modifying it. Make an afghan a different size, or transfer it to a shawl or poncho. Add a decorative stitch or border. - Make a cover for something – if you want to make a toilet paper cover, or a tea cozy, get the item you’re covering, crochet until you’ve got it covered. - Knitting patterns – substitute a single crochet for a knit, and transfer a pattern from one art to another.

If you come up with something you like, and you’re interested in sharing it, let me know ([email protected]). I can send it as part of a newsletter issue, use it as a future stitch along, or even post it on my website – all crediting you, the designer, of course. If you pattern is used as a stitch along, I’d like to post it to the website after it runs, but if you were prefer it wasn’t, that’s fine too.

Happy designing!

Question/Comments Please contact Age Szoke [email protected] Moderator, crochetpages Webmaster, Age’s Crochet Pages
