Shelter In Place Guidance

Shelter In Place Guidance

Shelter in Place Guidance:

Each and every building is different and what works as a shelter-in-place (SIP) for one building does not work for another. However, several generalities can be drawn:

 During a high wind (e.g., tornado) event, staff and visitors should shelter in an enclosed room with no glass. For most weather related events, SIP should be found on the lowest level floors. The exception is a flood event, where SIP should be found on the highest level floor.

 For a chemical emergency, SIP should be found on the highest floor as most chemicals are heavier than air.

 For criminal event, staff should SIP in a room (preferably an office) than can be locked and is without glass. Staff should stay out of sight during the criminal event as much as possible.

 For a terrorist event, the above (i.e., criminal event) will suffice for the short term. Security will direct long-term actions.

 All staff should keep a "Go Bag" at their workstation that contains non- perishable food, water, prescription medicines if needed, and a flashlight. An optional item is a comfortable pair of walking shoes. SI does not supply this "Go Bag" to its staff--it is up to the staff to maintain the contents.
