PHYSICS 1306, QUIZ 6 Chapter 7 March 8, 2002 Partial credit will be LIBERAL, provided that you show your work! USE BACK IF NEEDED!

Name: ______Social Security Number ______

1. (10 points) CONCEPTUAL QUESTIONS!! Using complete, grammatically correct, English sentences, answer the following questions: a. State the Law of Conservation of Momentum.

b. Explain the following terms: Elastic Collision, Inelastic Collision, Center of Mass.

2. (20 points) See the figure. A truck, mass M = 12,000 kg, traveling at a speed of 30 m/s strikes a car, mass m = 2,500 kg. The car is initially at rest. After the collision, the two STICK TOGETHER (the collision is inelastic!) and move off in the same direction as the truck was originally traveling.

a. What were the initial momentum and kinetic energy of the truck?

b. What was the momentum of the truck-car combination as they moved away from the collision? What was their speed just after the collision? What physical principle did you use to find these?

c. What was kinetic energy of the truck-car combination just after the collision? Is kinetic energy conserved in this collision? Is momentum conserved? Explain (using brief, complete and grammatically correct English sentences!).
