Special Edition Defence Studies Journal, Vol. 8, No. 2, June 2008 Eds. Tim Benbow and Jon Robb-Webb

This special edition of Defence Studies commemorates the launch of the Corbett Centre and reproduces the address given there by the First Sea Lord. He spoke on the subject of ‘Naval Ethos’ and the challenges that it faces in the contemporary world.

This paper is accompanied by a series of articles examining a number of themes touching on maritime history, strategy and policy issues. They include pieces that take as a starting point Julian Corbett’s own work on the campaign of Trafalgar and the integration in it of naval operations and wider policy objectives, and on the composition of the Royal Navy and the designation of its warships. Further articles take up issues considered by Corbett, such as the interaction of the Royal Navy and the Foreign Office in implementing the blockade policy in the First World War, or the extent to which Britain has been able to exploit maritime power to pursue a distinctive strategy. Other contributions bring subjects important to Corbett into the more recent times, including the often misunderstood impact of technological change on naval power, and the latest effort of the United States to develop a coherent maritime strategy that uses the range of means at the country’s disposal to address the defence and security problems of a globalising world. The aim of this special edition is to demonstrate that the work of thinkers such as Julian Corbett still has relevance and utility, and to suggest the fruitful interaction that can be achieved by using the past to shed light on the present in a whole range of maritime policy issues.

CONTENTS ‘Introduction’ Tim Benbow

‘Naval Ethos – the Challenge in the New World’ Admiral Sir Jonathon Band

‘Corbett and The Campaign of Trafalgar: naval operations in their strategic context’ Jon Robb-Webb

‘The naming of the parts: Corbett’s theory of the means reconsidered’ Eric Grove

‘Strategy and Power: the Royal Navy, the Foreign Office and the Blockade, 1914- 1917’ Greg Kennedy

‘Naval Power and the Challenge of Technological Change’ Tim Benbow

‘Corbett, Liddell Hart and the “British Way in Warfare” in the 1960s’ Ian Speller

‘A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower: What’s new?
