Dr. Santas’ Study Questions for Bowling for Columbine Michael Moore (2002)

Things to look for: Connection to Network, Wag The Dog and Rosewood Moore’s depiction of American fear as compared to people in other countries Moore’s attempts to find the causes of gun violence in the US

Questions: 1. Comment on the Michigan Militia, their connection to Terry Nichols and Tim McVeigh, the “Militia Babes” calendar, and the fact that Terry Nichols’ brother, James, had never heard of Gandhi. 2. Is there any connection, as Moore implies, between the killings at Littleton and the fact that there is a Lockheed Martin bomb plant there? Why does Moore show the scenes from the US history as a follow up to this exchange? 3. What caused the shooting at Columbine High School? Do stores like K-mart or the makers of automatic weapons share any responsibility for the shootings? Why did K-mart take the firearms and bullets off their shelves? 4. Why did the NRA hold a rally in the Littleton area and to Flint so soon after the shootings? Why is Moore critical of the NRA? Is he anti-gun? 5. What has happened to schools and student rights since Columbine? Are these changes unfortunate but necessary, or unwarranted? Have our children turned into monsters? 6. Why did everyone blame the violence on the violent music of Marilyn Manson? What is his response to these accusations? 7. Why does America have so much gun violence? What answer does Moore’s analysis (including the “Brief History of the US” cartoon) imply? For instance, what is the relationship between gun violence and racism? 8. Why are white Americans so fearful of crime? Of Black men? Given that crime rates are dropping and that most gun owners live in white suburbs, how does Moore explain this irrational fear? What role is played by reality TV shows like Cops? 9. What is different about Canada? Why don’t they lock their doors? Do locks keep criminals out or good people in? 10. If Canadians love guns and violent movies so much, why don’t they shoot each other like we do? What is Moore’s answer to this question? 11. Why does the sheriff of Genesee County think “Welfare to Work” is a bad program? What does this have to do with school shootings? 12. Compare K-mart corporate executives to Dick Clark and Charlton Heston. Why wouldn’t Dick Clark speak to him? Why does Heston walk out in the middle of his interview with Moore?
