<p>Grade 6: Changes Over Time – The Ethics of Selling History Lesson Seed: 9 Lesson Seed Prototype Lesson seeds are ideas for the standards that can be used to build a lesson. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds it is crucial that a teacher considers Universal Design for Learning and the needs of all learners. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. RL.6. Explain how an author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text. L.1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.  Ensure that pronouns are in the proper case (subjective, objective, possessive) SL.1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.</p><p>Student Outcomes/Suggested Instructional Activities  Provide time for students to compose a quickwrite and/or journal entry titled “The Fun We Have” about their favorite day and/or memory of school.  Solicit volunteers to share a few of their quickwrite and/or journal entries with the class.  Prompt students to consider the ways school might change in the future. Generate a list of students’ ideas and post these for reference.  Utilize an appropriate shared reading strategy to engage the class in reading “The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov.  Pair students to consider ways the author portrays both Margie’s and Tommy’s points of view in the story.  Prompt students to develop a series of interview questions that they would like to ask Margie about her school AND develop a series of interview questions that Margie would like to ask them about their school.  Direct students to trade questions with another student pair and answer the questions from both Margie’s and their own perspectives.  Instruct students to closely attend to the use of “they,” “we,” and “you” as part of their responses and consider the correct use of pronouns when developing their ideas.  Engage students in a structured discussion of thematic ideas and lessons learned from the story.
