This course explores historical interpretations of modern human experiences. Topics will be chosen by the instructor and may be repeated under different topics for up to 6 hours of credit. Section Course Description: Europe: This section provides an introduction to modern European political, social, economic, intellectual, and cultural, history since 1600. Lectures will sketch the main developments of the modern period, historically situate the topics and themes addressed in the assigned readings, and evaluate the promise of European civilization from the perspectives of inclusivity and marginalization as well as universality and particularity.</p><p>Student Learning Objective (Core Goal II.C): Students will recognize, identify, and engage with a variety of perspectives and concepts in the humanities and evaluate forms of human expression within and across cultures.</p><p>Student Learning Outcomes (Core Goal II.C): Students will be able to: 1) Apply methods of inquiry in the humanities 2) Critically interpret forms of human expression</p><p>Learning Outcomes Measured: Daily quizzes and occasional writing exercises will constitute 90% of your final grade (online quizzes- when assigned- are available @ www.coastal.edu/moodle). Questions about quizzes and quiz grades are to be addressed during office hours. A Final Exam Essay counts for 10% of your final grade. Up to 10% Class Participation Points are earned by informed and constructive class participation. </p><p>Grading Scale: A= 90-100; B+= 86-89; B= 80-85; C+= 76-79; C= 70-75; D+= 66-69; D= 60-65; F= 0-59; FX= failure as a result of academic dishonesty. The FX grade is treated as an F in the grade point average computation. With regard to ‘Repetition of Course Work,’ courses that receive an FX grade are not eligible to be repeated under the university’s “Repeat Forgiveness” option, and instead may only be repeated via the “Standard Repeat” option. When assigned, the FX grade will become a part of the student’s internal academic record and will appear on unofficial transcripts and within the student information system. The FX grade will not appear on the student’s official transcript. Also see “Essay Grading” below. </p>
