Homework Problem Set 3

Homework Problem Set 3

Homework due by noon on Wednesday Oct. 17.

Partial credit may be given even if the final answer is incorrect so please show all work!

Question 1 (1 point)

Name three quantities which are always conserved in nature. Which are vectors and which are scalars?

Question 2 (3 points) Fast Eddie McSpeedy is a receiver for the Kennesaw Kilowatts in the Metro Metric Football League and Big Bobby Clobber plays defense in the rival Marietta Megatons. Eddie has a mass of 85 kg and Bobby has a mass of 140 kg. Eddie catches the ball and runs eastward at 2.4 m/s until he collides with Bobby. Bobby’s velocity is 1.2 m/s in a direction 30 degrees south of west until he collides with Eddie.

(a) If Eddie and Bobby collide COMPLETELY INELASTICALLY what are each of their final velocities?

(b) If the collision between the two players lasts 1.5 seconds, approximately how much force does each player experience during the collision?

Question 3 (3 points) A wheel is rolling down a ramp. The ramp is 35 m long and inclined at an angle of 12 degrees from the horizontal. In all cases the wheel starts at rest from the top of the ramp and rolls down the ramp without slipping.

(a) If the wheel has a total mass of 1.5 kg, which is distributed in the shape of a thin hoop of radius 24 cm, what is its velocity when it reaches the bottom of the ramp?

(b) If the wheel has a total mass of 1.5 kg, which is distributed in the shape of a solid disk of radius 24 cm, what is its velocity when it reaches the bottom of the ramp?

(c) If the wheel has a total mass of 1.5 kg, which is distributed in the shape of an inner disk of radius 12 cm and a mass of 0.85 kg, surrounded by a hollow cylinder, also with a mass of 0.65 kg, which has an inner radius of 12 cm and an outer radius of 24 cm, what is its velocity when it reaches the bottom of the ramp? Which of the three wheels do you think would be most appropriate for a car?

Question 4 (3 points)

(a) A tetherball of mass 0.55 kg is travelling with a velocity of 1.4 m/s north, 2.3 m/s east and 0.5 m/s up. The tetherball is connected to a post, and the ball is 0.6 m north and 0.8 m west and 0.1 m below the point at which the rope is attached to the post. What is the angular momentum of the ball with respect to the point at which the rope is attached to the post?

(b) What is the angular momentum of the earth rotating around its axis?

(c) If the earth collapsed to the size of the tetherball (r = 15 cm), what would the new period of its rotation be?
