The Council of Texas Statisticians (COTS) Sponsored an Award at the Exxon-Mobile Texas

<p>The Council of Texas Statisticians (COTS) sponsored an award at the Exxon-mobile Texas Science and Engineering Fair (EMTSEF). The fair was held in San Antonio, Texas at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center on March 31, 2012. The award was for “The Best Use of Statistics in a Science Project”. A team of judges from the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association helped select three senior high division projects that showed excellence in the use and knowledge of statistical methods. The volunteer judges were Keying Ye, John Schoolfield, Danny Sharon, Ken Williams, Michael Lecocke, Pete Donahoe, Eddy Kwessi, Robert Ryan, and Howard Monroe.</p><p>First place and $125 were awarded to Sharjeel Syed, from John Jay Science and Engineering Academy in San Antonio, for his project, “Duckweeds Salty: A third year study of Duckweed.” Second place and $100 were awarded to Lauren Mandaville, from Seguin High School in Seguin, for her project, “Increasing Casket Decomposition.” Third place and $75 were awarded to Michael Mann from Westwood High School in Austin, for his project, “Interactions between Piriformospora indica & Glomus intraradices on Maize.”</p><p>Congratulations to all of the winners!</p><p>The Council of Texas Statisticians would like to thank all who volunteered to judge.
