By looking at what these particles are, we can determine whether they are pure substances, mechanical mixtures or solutions. In this unit, we will be looking at substances that we use in everyday life – from drinks and medicines, to cleaning agents and building materials. We will be practicing safe experimental practices to handle and manipulate different substances throughout this unit.

Assessment Breakdown Labs and Assignments 35% Quiz/Test 15% Culminating Task (My Life in Mixtures) 20% Daily work (i.e. class discussions, group work, text questions, etc.) 30%

Description of Unit Task: You will be mapping out the variety of pure substances and mixtures that you encounter in your daily life. Categories you will consider may include: kitchen/food substances, home supplies, school materials, transportation fuels, etc. You will create a visual log, map or schedule of the pure substances and mixtures that you use or rely on in a typical day, and analyze the impact you have on the environment through your usage of these materials.

You will be required to categorize each substance you choose as a pure substance, homogenous mixture/mechanical mixture or heterogenous mixture/solution, with evidence explaining why. Your final product may take many forms. For example, you may want to create a poster or a Powerpoint presentation. All projects should include thought about STSE impacts (Science and Technology on Society and the Environment).

Important Vocabulary for this Unit

Science Term Definition Diagram or more info Concentrated Solution

Dilute Solution

Filtration

Heterogeneous Mixture

Homogenous Mixture

Matter

Mechanical Mixture

Particle Theory

Pure Substance

Saturated Solution

Separation Methods

Solubility Solute

Solution

Solvent
