<p>Are you frustrated with your attempts to motivate patients to change harmful behavior? Tired of arguing the same points over and over? Change can be very difficult, especially those related to serious health issues such as obesity, nutrition and medication compliance. Would you like to discover a new way to motivate your patients?</p><p>Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an approach designed to facilitate resolution of issues that inhibit positive behavior change by actively engaging the patient in the process. In this seminar, you will learn and be able to demonstrate the four key strategies of motivational interviewing. You will develop an understanding of the collaborative, supportive and non- judgmental spirit of MI.</p><p>WHERE: The Children’s Hospital Mount Oxford Auditorium (2nd floor of hospital) 13123 E. 16th Ave Aurora, CO 80045</p><p>WHEN: Thursday, August 21st, 2008, 9-3pm Friday, August 22nd, 2008, 9-3pm (Lunch will be provided on both days) *10 CEU hours will be earned</p><p>WHO IS THE PRESENTER: Kathleen Garrett, M.A., N.C.C., MINT, a member of the internationally recognized Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), will be presenting this 2-day seminar which will forever change how you interact with your patients and increase your patients’ success rates! Ms. Garrett has extensive experience with telephone-based intervention studies in behavioral science and cancer control. She has served as Co-Investigator on eight NIH funded randomized studies testing the efficacy of telephone counseling in improving quality of life for cancer survivors and promoting healthy lifestyles in populations at risk for cancer and other chronic illnesses. Several of these studies evaluated innovative MI telephone counseling interventions that were developed and supervised by Ms. Garrett. She has conducted numerous MI trainings and workshops in areas as diverse as cancer prevention, diabetes management, community health, and psychiatry. She currently serves as faculty with expertise in MI for the Center for African American Health of the Metro Black Church Initiative in Denver Colorado and the Colorado state funded Patient Navigator and Community Health Worker Training Initiative. </p><p>**Support for Kathleen Garrett, MA, was provided by the Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association. </p><p>Jeanice Hansen, MSW, LCSW, is a seasoned medical Social Worker who received her Motivational Interviewing (MI) training from internationally known MI researcher and trainer, Steven Malcolm Berg-Smith, MS. She has provided training sessions on this method of communication to Community Health Workers, Patient Navigators and Oncology Social Workers with audiences of 10 to 250. She has continued to improve her training skills with the guidance and support of Kathie Garrett, MA by assisting Kathie with additional MI training programs in the Denver area. Training Goal and Objectives:</p><p>Goal of Training: The primary goal of this training is to present an introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI) and conduct a basic skills building workshop for clinical staff.
