Market News November 14, 2005 www.sfma.net No. 35

The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Certified Farmers’ Market Advisory Committee will meet in Salon A/B at the Marriot Ventura Beach Hotel, 2055 Harbor Blvd. in Ventura, CA from 2:00 – 5:00 PM on Tuesday, November 15, 2005. This meeting was planned to coincide with the California Farm Conference on November 13 – 15, 2005 in Ventura. The agenda will include a regulatory proposal regarding due process requirements for markets taking an action against a grower, a regulation making it a statewide requirement that markets submit a map with their market certificate applications, and the appointment of new committee members in 2006. The meeting is open to the public and invites your comments on these issues. ※

The USDA reports that the number of farmers’ markets in the United States has grown from 1,755 in 1994 to over 3,700 in 2004. Three million consumers shop weekly at these markets where an estimated 30,000 farmers and other venders sell their products. They estimate that the annual consumer spending in urban, suburban and rural farmers’ markets tops $1 billion. ※

Interestingly, the number of California certified farmers’ markets has not grown recently. According to CDFA figures, the number of markets reported to be operating in 2003 was 479. The number of markets fell to 450 in 2004, and rebounded in 2005 when 491 market certificates were issued around the State. As far as we know, CDFA does not keep records of how many of these are new markets, how many are annual renewals and how many markets close each year. Nonetheless, the total number of certified farmers’ markets in California has not changed markedly for several years. ※

The Southland Farmers’ Market Association Board of Directors will next meet from 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM on Sunday, December 4, 2005 at Memorial Park in Santa Monica. ※

Market News is a service of the Southland Farmers’ Market Association.
