Minimum Acceptable Volume: N/A Container: Screw-capped tube solid media slant Shipping Unit: Unit 42.</p><p>SPECIMEN REJECTION CRITERIA: Critical Data Needed For Testing: Patient name Patient date of birth Specimen source Date collected Submitting Agency</p><p>Specimens will be rejected if they:  Are received with either specimen container unlabeled or incomplete test request form or the specimen label not matching the test request form.  Are submitted in an inappropriate manner, i.e., are not shipped according to either Federal Postal Regulations and/or United Parcel Service/ Federal Express or other applicable, appropriate standards.  Are leaking.  Are in expired transport media.  Are submitted in Petri plates. If culture is from a priority specimen or is a suspect  bioterrorism agent, please call for consult and guidance. When Performed: Monday - Friday</p><p>RESULT INTERPRETATION: Salmonella strains will be serotyped by identifying antigenic characteristics Shigella strains will be serotyped and subgrouped by identifying antigenic characteristics Reference Range: N/A</p><p>FEES: N/A</p><p>NOTES:</p><p>1. Repeat Salmonella cultures from the same patient will be tested no more frequently than every three months. Multiple isolates from several sites in the same patient need not be tested. Prior consultation with the Microbiology Section is necessary in order to arrange more frequent testing.</p><p>2. All Salmonella and Shigella isolates will be serotyped. Isolates that do not type will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for serotyping.</p><p>3. Salmonella isolates identified as being related to an outbreak will be forwarded to the Pulse Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) laboratory. </p><p>ALIASES: Salmonella typing</p>
