From historical to current leadership theories, leadership principles and theoretical concepts are addressed. Focus is on ‘real world’ and present day application and the implications to organizations and to leaders. This course examines the development of leadership theories and approaches and their role in organizations today. Leadership in Teams: Given an organizational situation, identify strategies to develop, maintain, motivate, and sustain self-managed teams using concepts, theories and techniques of team leadership.</p><p>2. Collaboration in Teams: Given a case study or leadership situation, collect, assimilate, disseminate, and maximize the views of team stakeholders in order to reach defensible goals with minimal conflict.</p><p>3. Conflict: Given an organizational situation that requires interpersonal or interdepartmental action, identify situations of conflict, diagnose the impact of both overt and covert behavior, and develop a plan for conflict resolution using evidence-based methods.</p><p>4. Ethics: Given an organizational setting, identify ethical and dilemma-resolution practices, and make evidence-based decisions that integrate personal, social, and corporate responsibility. </p><p>5. Communication: Communicate orally and in writing to individuals and groups in a concise, clear, organized, and well-supported manner using formats and technology relevant to the organizational context. </p><p>6. Motivation: Given a leadership situation, identify workplace commitment theories to incorporate influences and power as a leader to motivate organizational stakeholders.</p><p>7. Research: Given an organizational need to evaluate and defend its actions or potential actions, select, analyze, and apply the assessment techniques, research methods, and/or statistical analyses needed to evaluate and defend those actions based on evidence</p><p>8. Knowledge and Understanding of the Field: Demonstrate competency in identifying and integrating the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, historical trends, and key figures in the field of organizational leadership.</p><p>9. Change: Evaluate the impact of change on organizations, organizational members, and other stakeholders and apply appropriate change models and theories to facilitate successful change.</p><p>3 10. Global diversity: Analyze and evaluate the involvement of diversity in leadership issues, with special attention to the implications of diversity for individuals, organizations, and societies.</p><p>11. Interpersonal Effectiveness: Achieve personal development and demonstrate positive relationship skills via effective communication, respect for others, and awareness of their impact on others. </p><p>Course Objectives: By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Compare and contrast the major leadership theories and discuss the key points of each theory. (Program Outcome 8). 2. Given different organizational scenarios, discuss and analyze the responsibilities and privileges of leaders, including ethical and moral decisions and the use of authority and power. (Program outcome(s) 3, 4, 6, 8) 3. Analyze their own leadership style(s) and the impact of those approaches in the workplace (Program Outcome 8, 10). 4. Analyze and interpret a particular performance-based organizational issue, develop a solution to the issue at hand, and apply appropriate leadership theories in the given situation (Program Outcome 6, 8, 9, 10). 5. Evaluate an organizational situation and discuss the process of leadership within groups relating to the alignment of the group to rules and norms of the organization.(Program outcome(s) 1, 2, 8) 6. Examine the differences between a leader and a manager and analyze the perspectives that shape each role for maintaining a healthy organization.(Program outcome 8)</p><p>Assignment Table: NOTE: All written assignments need to be in APA format.</p><p>Week Module Topics Readings Assignments 1 What is Leadership?  Northouse, 1 1. Write a short personal mission statement about What makes a good leader?  Kouses & Posner, why the study of leadership is important to you 1-2 and how you hope to use this experience. (You may include any relevant leadership roles you have assumed to relate to your mission). 2. Write, and share with the class, your own definition of leadership. What are the important </p><p>4 characteristics, and what do you think makes a good leader? How do you think a leader differs from a manger? Be sure to integrate material from this weeks readings and other literature as appropriate. 3. Identify a situation in your own work environment that necessitates the use of leadership skills and competencies. Write a short 2-3 page description of the situation, the key players, and any intended outcomes associated with the situation. This will be your own case study to be used through this class. 2 Leadership Theories: Trait  Northouse, 2-3 1. Using your case study, identify the key Approach; Skills Approach  Kouses & Posner, leadership traits and skills used by the key 3-4 leader(s). Evaluate the usefulness or appropriateness, as well as the shortcomings of these leadership approaches in your case situation. Write a 3-5 page paper of your analysis. 2. Based on your understanding of Trait & Skill approaches to leadership, write a brief executive summary describing the ways in which these approaches can be beneficial in your current setting. 3 Leadership Theories: Style  Northouse, 4-5 1. Using your own case study, how would the style Approach; Situational Approach  Kouses & Posner, and/or situational approaches be used? Evaluate 5-6 the usefulness or appropriateness, as well as the shortcomings of these leadership approaches to your case situation. Create a PPT of your analysis. 2. Based on your understanding of Style and </p><p>5 Situational approaches to leadership, write a 2-3 page reflection paper describing the ways in which these approaches can help develop a better leader.</p><p>4 Leadership Theories: Contingency  Northouse, 6-7 1. Using your own case study, how could the Theory; Path-Goal Theory  Kouses & Posner, contingency and path-goal theories be applied? 7-8 Evaluate the usefulness or appropriateness, as well as the shortcomings of these leadership approaches to your case situation. Present your analysis in the form of a memo. 2. Based on your understanding of Contingency & Path-Goal theories, write a 2-3 page paper describing the ways in which you demonstrate these approaches in your current setting, or the ways in which such approaches would be helpful for you as a leader.</p><p>5 Leadership Theories: Leader-  Northouse, 8-9 1. Using your own case study, how could the LMX member Exchange Theory;  Kouses & Posner, and/or transformational theories be used? Transformational Leadership 9-10 Evaluate the usefulness or appropriateness, as well as the shortcomings of these leadership theories in your case situation. Write a 3-5 page paper of your analysis. 2. Make a PPT presentation on how you would like the mission of your organization changed to reflect a transformational approach.</p><p>6 Leadership Theories: Team  Northouse, 10-11 1. Using your own case study, how could the team Leadership; Psychodynamic  Kouses & Posner, approach be utilized? Evaluate the usefulness or Approach 11-12 appropriateness, as well as the shortcomings of </p><p>6 using teams in your case situation. Write a 3-5 page paper of your analysis.</p><p>2. Conduct an interview with a leader in your organization and discuss how the individual developed his/her leadership skills, what principles guided them, what did they do to refine their skills, what were their recommendations to upcoming leaders.</p><p>7 Gender Issues & Leadership;  Northouse, 12-13 1. Using your own case study, identify the ethical Ethics & Leadership  Kouses & Posner, issues that may be present. How might these 13 issues be addressed or resolved? Write a 3-5 page paper of your analysis. 2. Based on your understanding of gender issues and leadership, prepare a debate for discussion in class describing the ways in which you see gender issues affecting leadership roles in your current setting. What do you think you need to be aware of as you think about the impact of gender on leadership roles and abilities? 3. Write a memo for distribution throughout the organization introducing a new CEO. Describe the exemplary record of achievements as a leader. Describe the qualities, skills, and attributes this person has. Make specific references to theories advanced in the course. 8 Final Synthesis & Integration  Peer reviewed 1. Final Integrative paper: Details of the articles based on assignment given below. paper topic</p><p>7 ASSIGNMENT DETAILS</p><p>Final Integrative Paper: Using your scenario first developed in week one, decide which leadership theories and approaches were used initially, and then what theories or approaches might have been more appropriate to use by the leaders involved. What course of action would you recommend given the scenario and intended outcomes, and how would your choice of theories help you accomplish your goals. Your paper should demonstrate your ability to analyze real world situations and integrate the concepts learned in this course. Students are encouraged to seek research and reference assistance from campus librarians.</p><p>Information Literacy: Argosy University’s Information Literacy Tutorial was developed to teach students fundamental and transferable research skills. The tutorial consists of five modules where students learn to select sources appropriate for academic-level research, search periodical indexes and search engines, and evaluate and cite information. In the tutorial, students study concepts and practice them through interactions. At the conclusion of each module, they can test their comprehension and receive immediate feedback. Each module takes less than 20 minutes to complete.
