Know the Units of the Magnetic Field: 1 Tesla (T) = 1 N/(A M)

PHYS 241-1 Notes for Test 4

Chapter 28 Magnetic Fields

Review and Summary is on p. 755.

Know the units of the magnetic field: 1 tesla (T) = 1 N/(Am).

Know how to determine the magnitude and direction of a cross product. (See p. 50 of your text.) v v Know Equation 28-2 for the force F on a charge moving with velocity v in a magnetic field: v v F qvv  B

Know the general description of the Hall Effect: When a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field such that the direction of the current in the conductor is not parallel to the direction of the field, some charge carriers build up along the sides of the conductor that are tangent to the magnetic field, creating a potential difference V across those sides of the conductor. V is called the Hall potential difference.

Be able to derive Equation 28-16 for the radius of the path of a charged particle circulating in a magnetic field.

Know Equation 28-26 for the force on a straight wire carrying a current in a uniform magnetic field.

Know how to derive Equation 28-17 for the frequency of motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field. Know Equations 28-19 and 28-18 for frequency and period (these were used in Physics 140).

Know the definition of the Magnetic Moment of a Coil: v v  NiA

v where N is the number of turns in the coil, i is the current in the coil and A is the area vector of the coil (determined by the direction of the current and the right hand rule). v v v Know Equation 28-37 for the torque  on a coil with magnetic moment  in a magnetic field B : v v   v  B

Know Equation 28-38 for the magnetic potential energy of a magnetic dipole in a magnetic field: v U  v  B

Continued on the other side Chapter 29 Magnetic Fields Due to Currents

Review and Summary is on p. 780.

Know how to use the Biot-Savart law (Equation 29-3) to find the magnetic field due to a given current configuration.
