Wyoming Game and Fish Department rev. 10/10/2014 Strategic Habitat Plan Crucial Habitat Area Narrative

Region: Green River Habitat Priority Area Upper Muddy Creek Watershed (3BF) Name: Habitat Area Type: Aquatic Terrestrial Combined Stream, riparian, lotic wetland, willow, aspen, mountain shrub Habitat Values: Genetically pure Colorado River cutthroat trout exist in the upper coldwater habitat reaches of West Muddy and Van Tassel creeks; the lower warm water reaches of Muddy Creek support habitat for flannelmouth suckers and roundtail chubs. Reason Selected: Habitat for the sensitive native fish assemblage warrants protection. This crucial habitat area may provide a biological opportunity to restore the entire native cold and warm water fish species assemblage within the crucial area if landowners are willing to participate. Area Boundary The crucial area is delineated as the combination of sixth level HUCs: Description: Muddy Creek 140401080101, 140401080102, 140401080103, 140401080104, 140401080105, and 140401080106. Focal species or species Colorado River cutthroat trout (NSS2), flannelmouth sucker (NSS1), assemblage(s) (limit 6): bluehead suckers (NSS1), roundtail chubs (NSS1), mountain suckers (NSS3), northern leopard frog (NSSU) SWAP Tier 1 Colorado River cutthroat trout, flannelmouth sucker, roundtail chub, species: boreal toad, Great Basin spadefoot

Solutions or actions:  Promote sound livestock grazing practices throughout the watershed.  Promote water management practices that improve habitat conditions for the fishery.  Work with landowners to gain support and approval for restoring the native fish assemblage Additional Issues include: Information:  Irrigation of native hay crops, in many instances, depletes river flows during late summer, thus diminishing habitat function for fish. There is a trans basin water diversion from Van Tassel Creek to the Bear River drainage, and there may be others.  Livestock grazing management could be improved to restore and enhance riparian habitat and watershed function. Land ownership and BLM: 41,514 ac (27%), surface area: USFS: 0 ac (0%), State: 7,682 ac (5%), Wyoming Game and Fish Department rev. 10/10/2014 Strategic Habitat Plan Crucial Habitat Area Narrative

Private: 103,832 ac (68%), Water: 49 ac (0%), Total area: 153,077 ac
