Job Descriptions</p><p>Job Title: R&D Manager, Bakery Reports to: Plant Manager / Sector VP Department: Operations Status: Full-Time / Exempt Revision Date: 04/12/2017 Revision Level: 00 Approved By: Human Resource Manager</p><p>Scope: The R&D Manager is responsible for managing product development from idealization to commercialization, resulting in the launch of new food items and / or maintenance of existing food products in the portfolio. The product category scope of this position includes baked cookies and crackers, frozen breads and doughs, RRTE and RTE pies and cakes, etc. Responsibilities also include recruiting, hiring and training R&D personnel, maintaining the R&D lab and equipment, interacting with the plant for daily manufacturing needs.</p><p>Duties & Responsibilities:  Possess strong business acumen to appropriately scope the technical development for each project.  Lead and collaborate with cross-functional team members in various departments including Marketing, Sales, Finance, Operations, Quality, Procurement, and Regulatory.  Guides, influences, and persuades internal members as well as external partners.  Communicate (written and oral) complex messages clearly and in a manner that is appropriate to the specific audience. Technical messaging will cover development status (both product and process), bring technical leadership and transparency to departments outside R&D.  Create opportunities for new and relevant intellectual property and drive these efforts for bakery products.  Deliver projects successfully with the agreed upon metrics including cost, aesthetics, technical feasibility, and customer/consumer acceptance.  Manage the designing, planning, coordinating, and executing of complex designs of experiments by the technical team from bench top through scale-up.  Own the technical development of multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate ability to troubleshoot and resolve various project challenges with the support of the plant manager / sector VP.  Critically review project results and provide recommendations on medium and high complexity projects.  Plan and execute product research to support development as needed.  Interact directly with potential customers and existing customers for new products.  Position requires some travel as some of the work will be done at other J&J sites or the customer’s location.  Responsible for food safety and quality.</p><p>Qualifications & Requirements:  7 or more years’ experience in Research and Development roles at the manufacturing or corporate HQ level.  Demonstrated success working with a wide variety of customers (e.g. Retail, Food Service, National and Industrial Account Clients, etc.).  Master’s or Doctoral level degree in Food Science, Engineering, Culinary Arts, or other closely related field of study from an accredited institution.  Previous bakery industry experience preferred.  HACCP Certified preferred  Proficient Microsoft Office skills  Demonstrated success in project management, monitoring, follow-up and closure.  Practical laboratory skills gained within degree studies.  Basic understanding of practical statistics.  Advanced mathematics knowledge and computer literacy.</p><p>J:\Job Descriptions/Administration/R&D Manager  General understanding of food processing (formulation, cooking, freezing, portioning, packaging, etc.).  Excellent problem-solving skills combined with analytical skills and attention to detail.  Good communications skills are essential. Can resolve conflict and provide constructive feedback.  Enthusiasm and self-motivation to function independently, as well as with a team.  Demonstrated knowledge of culinary arts and snacking trends.  Strong, proactive customer service orientation.  Advanced written, oral, communication and inter-personal skills.  Demonstrated sound work ethic, honesty and moral character.  Must be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs.  Must be able to work for extended periods in a hot, fast-paced food manufacturing environment</p><p>Additional Information  Preferred experience in a bakery environment.  Six Sigma, Green Belt or Black Belt certification preferred.  R&D Specialist will serve as back-up for the R&D Manager.
