<p> Shauna Traxler</p><p>Senior Design II</p><p>Week 3 Demo – 1 Page Summary</p><p>December 16, 2011</p><p>Mini Tank Construction</p><p>What I said I would do:</p><p> Create a ~2’ x 2’ useable model</p><p> o Membrane</p><p> o Plywood</p><p> o Glue (wood)</p><p> o Angle iron</p><p> o Clean-up any failures</p><p> Week 1: all materials on hand</p><p> Week 2: tank built</p><p> Week 3: demo</p><p>What I got done:</p><p> Week 1:</p><p> o Acquire steel (cut to size by SMC)</p><p> o Buy plywood and cut to size</p><p> Week 2:</p><p> o Bottom frame welded</p><p> o Holes drilled with countersinks for fasteners in frame and uprights</p><p> o Acquire additional steel for top frame</p><p> o Begin prepping steel for top frame</p><p> Week 3: o Holes drilled with countersinks for fasteners in top frame</p><p> o Finished welding top frame</p><p> o Welded uprights to bottom frame</p><p> o Welded top rail to rest of structure</p><p> o Fitted plywood panels into structure</p><p> o Cut windows in side and bottom panels</p><p> o Used a router to create “ledge” for Lexan</p><p> o Fit liner into mini tank</p><p> o Water test</p><p> o Fit Lexan windows with liner in tank</p><p> o Silicone windows</p><p> Created a ~2’ x 2’ useable model</p><p> o 2” x 2” x ¼”/3/8” steel angle box</p><p> o Holes in angle to secure plywood and liner to steel frame</p><p> o 5 plywood panels to make up the wall structure, with “window” cut outs</p><p> o 6mm plastic liner as membrane</p><p> o (2) - ¼” Lexan windows</p><p> o Siliconed windows</p><p>What I learned:</p><p> Using machine shop equipment again</p><p> Grinding</p><p> Welding – what a correct weld looks line and what to do if it looks wrong</p><p> Don’t wear anything I don’t want to get dirty when working in the machine shop</p><p> Cut out steel where needed to create a flush surface</p><p> Grind corners that are to be welded at a 45° angle for weld</p><p> For top angles, ends should be cut to a 45° angle for a better weld (consult with other team members prior to cutting 45° angles)  A small block of steel will be drilled and tapped, welded onto the bottom of the tank, for the mounts</p><p> Wood panels will be not be modular, they will be 6’/8’ pieces</p><p> o The windows will be in separate panels</p><p> Use fasteners to attach wood to steel, instead of using “clips” at the top of the tank</p><p> Move full size tank using an equipment dolly, provided by machine shop</p><p>Plan for weeks 4-6:</p><p> Confirm the amount and lengths of steel needed</p><p> Place metal order with SMC – need it in by 1/2/12</p><p> Figure out how many sheets of plywood are needed</p><p> Take apart mini tank</p><p> Use steel and wood from mini tank for final design</p><p> Start constructing final tank 1/2/12-1/6/12</p><p> Tank needs to be complete at the end of week 5</p><p> o Motor, rails, cart, etc. need to be attached to tank during week 6</p>
