OCTOBER 2005 Volume 3, Issue 10, Page 2 President’s Message Your Monthly Message from Pikes Peak Chapter President Steve Wertenberger, CFM

Greetings,

Learn everything you can, whenever you can, because you never know what the future might hold.

As most of you know, I recently transitioned into the commercial real estate industry as a Broker Associate and loved virtually every aspect of it. More recently, I accepted an offer for the International Facilities Project Manager position with Compassion International. And, some of my varied training and experience over the years, including real estate, will contribute to my success in this new position.

Two of the things I enjoyed most about real estate were the enjoyment of helping people find the perfect place for a great price and finding great tenants for landlords. In short, it was being of service to my clients. It is my impression that most facility professionals are very service oriented or we wouldn’t be in the business.

The service that good FM’s provide for an organization is very significant. Not only do we contribute to financial performance, but comfort, safety, operational efficiencies, and first impressions, are all affected by how well we do our work. Whether you work for a non-profit in helping them to reduce costs or for a commercial industry contributing to the bottom line I encourage you to take every opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills in every possible area.

As you continue to develop professionally, in addition to benefiting your employer, you will also become well-rounded and more marketable too. You never know where or how your talents might be used.

PO Box 1573 Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA 80901 Phone: 719-579-8455 www.ifma-pikespeak.org OCTOBER 2005 Volume 3, Issue 10, Page 3

So check out the many educational opportunities presented by the Pikes Peak Chapter and IFMA Headquarters and take advantage. Rather than holding regular biweekly or monthly meetings at scheduled times and locations, the program will now focus more upon mentorship.

Interested participants will be interviewed to determine what they wish to get out of the program. Then, a career seeker will be paired with a specially selected mentor. The team will then decide how, where and how often to meet. This change will create greater one-on-one opportunities for assistance. Also, the mentorship program will operate on a schedule that is mutually convenient for both the job seeker and the mentor. The mentor’s role will be to advise, encourage, offer networking opportunities and act as a sounding board. The entire Career Transition Group still may decide to meet in a group setting from time to time.

The Career Transition Group is open to Pikes Peak chapter members and friends. Your participation will be kept confidential. If you are in career transition and would like to establish a mentorship arrangement with a chapter member, please contact Tom Stolting at 635-5267 or [email protected].

IFMA’s 2005 Fall Symposium A collection of IFMA Competency Courses

Location: Oct. 19-22, 2005 Philadelphia Marriott

Whether you’re pursuing a credentialing program, seeking increased networking opportunities or simply want to improve your knowledge and skills, IFMA’s 2005 Fall Symposium is an informative, affordable and convenient answer to your professional development needs.

Taking place prior to IFMA’s World Workplace, the Fall Symposium is an ideal educational “appetizer” before heading to IFMA’s largest educational and networking event of the year!

World Workplace Edition Industry and Interest Day at World Workplace Sunday, October 23, 2005, 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

The 15 IFMA Councils participating in Industry and Interest Day are sponsoring a breakfast prior to the sessions. So, starting in October I have challenged the employees at my site to go above and beyond, and donate regularly over a 3- month period. Donating to this local charity takes care of both Victims affected by the recent the Hurricane Season, and our local needs.

This is our challenge to you: Challenge your facilities, collect the food, take it in before the 25th of each month, and report back your weights.
