Freud conceptualized the personality development which he believed was developed in ways to satisfy sexual instinct during course of life as craving sensual pleasure of all kinds of energy generated by libido. Freud also explained the defense mechanisms used by individuals to cope during the personality development.

Carl Jung as follower of Freud mostly agreed with his tenets, but expanded the role of “unconscious”. Jung explained that libido represents all life forces, not just sexual ones as Freud theorized. Jung’s contribution include seeing the unconscious ego’s source of strength and vitality believing that the unconscious consists of personal unconscious and collective unconscious. Personal unconscious includes repressed thoughts, forgotten experiences and undeveloped ideas, which may enter consciousness if an incident triggers recall. The collective unconscious comprises memories and behavior patterns that are inherited from past generations and shared by all humans. Jung has developed the Archetypes which are thought forms common to all human beings, stored in collective unconscious-appears in our thoughts as mental images. Jung defined the two attitude types: extroverts who focus on social life and external world instead of internal experience, and introverts who usually focus on personal thoughts and feelings. Jung divided people into rational individuals-regulate actions by thinking and feeling and irrational who base actions on perceptions either through sense or through intuitions.

Carl Rogers’ contributions elaborated on men and women developing personalities in service of positive goals. According to Rogers, the actualizing tendency is the drive of every organism to fulfill its biological potential and become what they are inherently capable of becoming. It is a drive of human beings to fulfill their self-concepts, or the images they have of themselves. For s person to be fully functioning person, his self- concept must closely resemble his or her inborn capacities or potentials. Individuals brought up with unconditional positive regard with full acceptance and love of another person regardless of own behavior tend to become more fully functioning.

BEH 225 Part II

Choose three of your favorite television characters; past or present.

Complete the following matrix describing the characters’ personalities from the point of view of the three theorists, Jung, Freud, and Rogers.

TV Character Jung Rogers Freud 1.Harry (Harry He is a magical Harry is a character Harry represents the Potter) hero. who lost contact “Ego” mediating with actualization between Ron and was left to (representing Id) figure out life on his and Hermione own.
