Not much is known about his childhood, but a lot is known about him as a young man. He left home because his parents promised the family fortune to his older brother, so he became Antonio de Mendoza's assistant and went to New Spain (Mexico.) In 1537, he married Dona Beatriz de Estrada, the daughter of the colonial treasurer and received a huge estate. In 1538, he became governor of the province Nueva Galica, New Spain Expedition Mendoza told him to go on his expedition. He looked for the fabled 7 cities of gold and brought 300 soldiers, 1,000 natives, servants, slaves, and a lot of livestock. After a while, he thought he found the 7 cities, but it was just a Zuni Indian village. After that he sent people east & west to look for the cities and one party came across the Grand Canyon. Francisco Coronado moved his headquarters to a pueblo village, but he had to fight the villagers.

An Indian chief told Coronado that the king of Quivira had a lot of gold. Quivira is now day Kansas. There wasn't any gold, it was just a village, so he killed the guide and went home. However, he did discover another thing; the buffalo. Death Coronado was relieved of his place as governor and became a city council member of Mexico City until his death of sickness on Sept. 22, 1554 at age 44.
