In the process students get an overview of the development of English language/literature and the journey from Old English, passing by Middle English, then finally Modern English. Representative work for each era is being introduced. In addition the variety of forms of poetry, such as the sonnet, the ode, the epic, the elegy and the dramatic monologue will be emphasised and corresponding representative selections of poems will be studied. Various literary devices, like the image, symbol and metaphor will be brought to students’ attention. Fiction in the form of a short novel will also be analysed and drama will receive equal attention as two plays will be introduced.</p><p>Course Objectives: An in-class reading of selections of all three literary genres is necessary. The poetry selections should reflect its varied nature and various forms (Epic, elegy, ballad, Ode, Dramatic Monologue) The two types of Drama (Tragedy, Comedy) will be exemplified in reading Oedipus the King and The Odd Couple.
