OFFSHORE WE ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE SPOTTERS FOR A RANGE OF TASKS INVOLVING CRANE MOVEMENTS, BY BOTH EMPLOYERS AND CLIENTS ALIKE. WHY DOES THIS DIFFER WITH ONSHORE ACTIVITIES - I DON'T KNOW. IT WOULD APPEAR COMMON SENSE SHOULD PREVAIL AMONG STEVEDORING COMPANIES TO ACTIVELY ENCOURAGE THE USE OF HATCHMEN.</p><p>Stevedoring Should the guidance material refer to the qualifications (Cert II, Cert III and qualifications Cert IV in Stevedoring) that have been developed for the stevedoring industry?</p><p>DEFINATELY IMPORTANT TO HAVE TRAINED AND QUALIFIED WORKERS ON THE WATERFRONT AS WELL AS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE MARITIME INDUSTRY. IF A CODE OF PRACTICE IS TO BE FORMED IT WOULDN'T BE COMPLETE WITHOUT REFERENCE TO PERSONNEL QUALIFICATIONS.</p><p>Safety Induction Should the newly developed stevedoring ‘safety skill-set’ be used to skill-set underpin safety inductions?</p><p>ONCE AGAIN PLEASE REFER TO THE OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY WHERE WE CONDUCT SAFETY INDUCTIONS FOR ALL NEW STARTERS AS WELL AS TIME OUT FOR SAFETY MEETINGS ON A VERY REGULAR BASIS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES. ALL THIS ENCOURAGED BY OUR EMPLOYERS.</p><p>Use of checklists Should the safety checklists, which set out examples of the types of hazards, and acceptable/unacceptable ways of handling those hazards, be maintained in the guidance material?</p><p>CHECKLISTS ARE THE ONLY WAY TO OPERATE EFFICIENTLY.</p><p>Comments on the implementation of the national guidance material in each jurisdiction which may have included launches, information and training sessions, and whether it has been useful in the workplace as a resource for improving safety practices.
