Hetty lived in a little gray house with a big stone chimney and a 1.______screen door that squeaked in a friendly way for comings and goings.</p><p>2. In back of the house was a tin-roof shed, where Papa mended other 2.______people’s trucks and tractors, and cars that weren’t running anymore. ______</p><p>3. In front of the house was a dusty road that ran through a field, up 3.______over a hill, and out of sight.</p><p>4. Sometimes Hetty walked with Mama down the dusty road. 4.______</p><p>5. Sometimes she walked with Papa. 5.______</p><p>6. But Hetty had never, ever been allowed down the dusty road all by 6.______herself. ______7. One afternoon Mama said, “Mr. Birdie’s speckled hens are laying. 7.______</p><p>8. Wouldn’t fresh eggs be nice for tomorrow’s breakfast?” 8.______</p><p>9. She sighed and shook her head. 9.______</p><p>10. “I just don’t have time to walk to Mr. Birdie’s. 10.______</p><p>11. It’s too bad.” 11.______</p><p>12. “Scrambled eggs for breakfast!” said Papa. 12.______</p><p>13. “If only I had the time, I’d go myself.” 13.______</p><p>14. “I can do it,” said Hetty. 14.______</p><p>15. I’m big enough to go to Mr. Birdie’s all by myself.” 15.______</p><p>16. “Well . . .,” said Mama. 16.______17. “Look at this big girl,” said Papa. 17.______</p><p>18. “Hetty can do it, Mama. 18.______</p><p>19. Absolutely.” 19.______</p><p>20. Papa gave Hetty a handful of coins and a wicker basket. 20.______</p><p>21. “One dozen eggs,” he told her. 21.______</p><p>22. “Twelve big beauties. 22.______</p><p>23. No cracks.” 23.______</p><p>24. “Be sure to say thank you to Mr. Birdie,” said Mama. 24.______</p><p>25. “Come straight home,” said Papa. 25.______</p><p>26. “Don’t dillydally,” said Mama. 26.______27. Squeak-bang! went the screen door, and Hetty was on her way. 27.______</p><p>28. She marched straight down the dusty road, swinging the basket 28.______and jingling the coins in her pocket.</p><p>29. This is what it’s like to be grown-up, she thought. 29.______</p><p>30. You have money in our pocket, and you can go down the road all 30.______by yourself.</p><p>31. She listened to her shoes going thup, thup, thup, thup, and she 31.______made up some walking words to say as she went along:</p><p>32. Down the road, 32.______one and two, eggs for breakfast, how-de-do!</p><p>33. Eggs for breakfast, 33.______clickety-clack, eggs for breakfast, not a crack! ______34. Bump! went the basket against Hetty’s knee. 34.______</p><p>35. Bump! Bump! 35.______</p><p>36. When this basket is full of eggs, thought Hetty, I’ll walk my 36.______smoothest so they won’t roll around and break.</p><p>37. She practiced walking as if she were skimming across a frozen 37.______pond on ice skates.</p><p>38. Pretty soon her walk was so smooth that she balanced the wicker 38.______basket on her head and climed all the way to the top of the hill before it fell off.</p><p>39. With the basket over her arm, Hetty raced down the other side, 39.______her pigtails flying. ______</p><p>40. She felt inside her pocket to make sure the coins were still there. 40.______</p><p>41. Then she continued down the road . . . through a meadow . . . 41.______across a stream . . . past a house or two . . . down a street . . . around a corner . . . up some steps . . . ______42. . . . and into the cool shadows of Mr. Birdie’s Emporium and Dry 42.______Goods Store. ______</p><p>43. “Well, now,” said Mr. Birdie, “here’s Hetty, all by herself.” 43.______</p><p>44. “Good day, Mr. Birdie,” said Hetty, just as Mama would have 44.______said.</p><p>45. “I’d like a dozen eggs, please.” 45.______</p><p>46. She slapped the coins down on the counter, just as Papa would 46.______have done.</p><p>47. “Twelve big beauties. 47.______</p><p>48. No cracks.” 48.______</p><p>49. While Mr. Birdie put twelve big brown eggs into the wicker 49.______basket, Hetty walked slowly down a cluttered aisle, looking closely at cans and cartons and bolts of fabric, jusat as if she might decide to buy something else. 50. Before she left, she remembered to say, “Thank you, Mr. Birdie.” 50.______</p><p>51. Around the corner went Hetty, down the street, past a house or 51.______two, doing her smooth walk and holding the basket carefully so it wouldn’t bump against her knees.</p><p>52. When she came to the stream, she stopped with one foot on a 52.______fallen log.</p><p>53. What if it wobbles? thought Hetty. 53.______</p><p>54.What if this log wobbles me off and I drop the eggs? 54.______</p><p>55. She stepped down into the cold water and splashed across the 55.______stream, straight across to the other side.</p><p>56. No use taking a chance, thought Hetty. 56.______</p><p>57. Squish, squish, went Hetty’s wet shoes on the dusty road. 57.______58. Squish, squish, squish, squish, and Hetty said her walking words: 58.______</p><p>59. Down the road, 59.______one and two, egs for breakfast, how-de-do!</p><p>60. Hetty was so busy doing her smooth walk, and saying her 60.______walking words, and admiring the eggs in the basket that she didn’t see a rock sticking up in the middle of the road.</p><p>61. She walked along, getting closer to the rock with every step. 61.______</p><p>62. Eggs for breakfast, 62.______clickety-clack, eggs for breakfast, not a –OUCH! ______</p><p>63. Hetty’s toe hit the rock, and she stumbled forward. 63.______</p><p>64. She had to hop and jump to keep from falling. 64.______65. Inside the basket the eggs rattled together with little clinky 65.______sounds. ______</p><p>66. “OH, no!” said Hetty. 66.______</p><p>67. She knelt down on the road and took the eggs out of the basket. 67.______</p><p>68. Scarcely breathing, she examined every one. 68.______</p><p>69. “Not a crack,” she said with a sigh. 69.______</p><p>70. She wiped each egg off on her shirt and put them all back inside. 70.______</p><p>71. Then she was on her way again, this time keeping a sharp eye out 71.______for obstacles on the road. ______</p><p>72. It seemed like a very long road. 72.______73. The sun was hot, and by the time she reached the meadow, Hetty 73.______was tired.</p><p>74. But there, in the middle of the meadow, was a big wild apple tree, 74.______full of bright red apples.</p><p>75. Sweet, juicy, crackly-crisp apples. 75.______</p><p>76. Papa’s favorites. 76.______</p><p>77. Mama’s, too. 77.______</p><p>78. Hetty herself was very fond of apples. 78.______</p><p>79. Just three, thought Hetty, and I’ll go straight home. 79.______</p><p>80. She made her way through the weeds, snagging foxtails in her 80.______socks and holding the egg basket carefully in front of her. ______</p><p>81. Hetty picked an apple for Mama. 81.______82. She picked an apple for herself. 82.______</p><p>83. Now for a big, red, Papa-size apple. 83.______</p><p>84. She reached up . . . up . . . and the wicker basket tipped just a little 84.______bit.</p><p>85. She reached higher . . .higher . . . and the basket tipped a little 85.______more . . .a little more . . . ______</p><p>86. SPLAT! 86.______</p><p>87. Hetty wanted to cry. 87.______</p><p>88. She wanted to hide. 88.______</p><p>89. She wanted to climb up into the apple tree and never, ever come 89.______down.</p><p>90. She didn’t want to go home and tell Papa and Mama there would 90.______be no eggs for breakfast. 91. Up she climbed, right up into the old apple tree, as high as she 91.______could go.</p><p>92. And there she sat, just thinking, and feeling sad, and not wanting 92.______to go home. ______</p><p>93. After a long time Hetty saw something moving, way down the 93.______dusty road.</p><p>94. It was Papa. 94.______</p><p>95. Hetty made herself as small as she could. 95.______</p><p>96. Papa, whose sharp eyes never missed a thing, came striding 96.______through the tall meadow grass.</p><p>97. “So!” he said. 97.______</p><p>98. “This is where I find you. 98.______</p><p>99. Is this how you bring eggs home for breakfast?” 99.______100. “ I was picking apples for us,” said Hetty with a sob. 100.______</p><p>101. “I broke the eggs, Papa. 101.______</p><p>102. Every single one.” 102.______</p><p>103. Papa nudged the basket with the toe of his boot. 103.______</p><p>104. “I see,” he said. 104.______</p><p>105. “And you climbed up into the tree to think it over.” 105.______</p><p>106. Suddenly his face wrinkled into a smile. 106.______</p><p>107. “There’s no finer place than an apple tree to think things over.” 107.______</p><p>108. And Papa climbed up beside her. 108.______</p><p>109. By the time Mama came through the meadow grass, there was a 109.______pile of apple cores underneath the tree. 110. Hetty and Papa had chins sticky with apple juice. 110.______</p><p>111. Mama nudged the basket with the toe of her shoe. 111.______</p><p>112. “Just look at this! I’m waiting for twelve beautiful eggs, and 112.______what do I find? Shells!”</p><p>113. “I’m sorry, Mama,” said Hetty. 113.______</p><p>114. “I dropped the eggs. 114.______</p><p>115. I was trying to pick some apples--” 115.______</p><p>116. “Fine, sweet apples,” said Papa. 116.______</p><p>117. Mama stared up into the tree. 117.______</p><p>118. “Well, well,” she said. 118.______</p><p>119. “Just look at the two big birds in the apple tree.” 119.______120. Papa whistled like a magpie. 120.______</p><p>121. “Tweet, tweet, tweet,” went Hetty. 121.______</p><p>122. Pretty soon there were three big birds in the apple tree. 122.______</p><p>123. Mama put her arm around Hetty. 123.______</p><p>124. “I’d almost forgotten how lovely the world looks from a tree,” 124.______Mama said.</p><p>125. “Everyone should spend some time in an apple tree,” Papa 125.______agreed.</p><p>126. “Absolutely.” 126.______</p><p>127. When they walked back home along the dusty road, they had not 127.______one egg among them. 128. But Mama’s skirt, and Papa’s pockets, and Hetty’s basket were 128.______full of sweet red apples. ______</p><p>129. And the next morning . . . there was apple pie for breakfast. 129.______</p>
