They quickly established good, basic technique on the instrument and I was delighted that, in December, they were able to perform two simple pieces of music fluently, from memory, at an assembly for parents. During the Spring Term the group continued to develop their instrumental technique, performing longer, more complex tunes, using an increasing range of notes. They also developed their confidence in improvising and were involved in composing their own music, often from a descriptive starting point, both individually and as a group. In the Summer Term, the group began to take part in School Orchestra rehearsals and responded well to the new challenges of this situation: the need to match their playing to that of other musicians playing different instruments (in terms of rhythm and dynamic level, for example); reading from musical notation. The group demonstrated their wide range of well-established musical skills when they performed in the Assembly in May. I expect the young musicians to continue to make good progress in their music-making in Year 6, particularly if they are able to do more regular clarinet practice at home.
