Select One of These Options

AP Physics – C Summer Assignment 2013

Select one of these options:

A. That Can’t Happen – Really! Watch a feature length action or science fiction movie (90 – 120 minutes average), and describe thoroughly five scenes where the laws of physics are either questionable or totally violated. Be specific with respect to how you would direct this movie in order to be consistent with physical laws. (Example: Star Wars – The death star destroys an entire planet with a loud explosion and burning flames.)

B. How does Harry Do It? Read or reread one of the Harry Potter novels and describe thoroughly five examples of sorcery or paranormal actions that Harry demonstrates. You are to recast the scene in a way that is in keeping with physical laws. (Example: In his first year at Hogwarts, Harry receives an invisibility cloak from his father. Optical camouflage is not magic, but an example of augmented reality technology.)

C. Physics of Sport Using any sport with which you are familiar, find images or video clips of five different action scenes in that sport. Analyze the forces and motion taking place in those images with labeled free body diagrams and a description of how they interact with each other. (Example: Lacrosse – The lacrosse stick is a third class lever with a fulcrum, effort force and resistance load. It is also a rotating basket with torque and rotational inertia.)

D. The Hadron Supercollider Using the CERN web site, choose any five projects that are currently being studied by engineers. Write a brief summary of the procedure that is being used, and highlight the physics applications in their research. (Example: July 2012 a particle suspected of being the Higgs Boson left a vapor trail that is giving engineers evidence of the Higgs field that causes particles to have mass.)

Your report is to be 5 paragraphs, and may include appropriate images where they apply to your discussion. Specific physics principles are to be explained in each paragraph. Your completed report along with solutions to the math myth-buster is to be submitted on Friday September 6, 2013. This will count as your first test in AP Physics. Math Myth-Busters

Debunk these math operations (no calculators please).
