<p> Brandeis University – The Hebrew Program עברית 44b Hebrew Advanced Intermediate Hebrew: Israeli Culture and Media</p><p>Fall 2017</p><p>Aliza Brosh [email protected] ASAC - 316 ext. 62956 Office Hours: Tue 12-1 and by appointment</p><p>Course prerequisites: Completion of Hebrew 34, 39, 35 or an equivalent as determined by the Placement Exam.</p><p>Course description: - Poems, short newspaper articles - Grammar review (נפעל) Verbs: binyan Nifal - </p><p>(על החלומות) ’Short story ‘On Dreams - (למרות, אף על פי) Syntax: concessional clauses - verbal nouns ;(הופעל) Verbs: binyan Huf’al - </p><p>(בלוז לחופש הגדול) ’Movie ‘Late Summer Blues - ,(אם, אילו, לולא) conditional clauses ,(לא...אלא) Syntax: not…but - prepositions (פועל) Verbs: binyan Pu’al - </p><p>Course objectives: To reinforce the language skills required at the advanced level through the following:  enrichment of vocabulary relevant to current events  expressing opinions  fluency in writing and speaking  usage of all tenses in active and passive voice, and verbal nouns  reading prose (‘On dreams’ by David Shachar), reading poetry  viewing Israeli films (‘Late Summer Blues’, ‘Basic Training’)  singing Israeli songs  selected readings from Israeli newspapers Course requirements:  attend all classes - three absences will affect the final grade by 1/2 letter grade  participate in classroom discussions and activities  complete all assignments on time  report in writing and orally about a news item (every Thursday)  make one 10 minute individual presentation in class  take all quizzes, midterm and final exams  participate in conversation sessions with a peer tutor once a week (half hour sessions)  and most important – have fun! </p><p>Extracurricular events: Students are strongly recommended to participate in extracurricular events, suggested by the instructor, such as lectures and Israeli movies as well as departmental activities and the Eta Beta Rho Brandeis Chapter.</p><p>Grade distribution: attendance 10% נוכחות homework and weekly current event journal שיעורי בית, יומן חדשות שבועי and compositions 30% וחיבורים presentations 10% מצגות quizzes 15% בחנים midterm 15% מבחן אמצע הסמסטר final exam 20% מבחן סוף הסמסטר </p><p>Preparation time: Success in this 4 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will spend a minimum of 9 hours of study time per week in preparation for class (readings, papers, discussion sections, preparation for exams, etc.).</p><p>Academic Honesty: You must complete all assignments alone. In your writing, you must follow rules of attribution, meaning that you must cite all sources consulted in preparing your papers. As stated in the Student Handbook, “Every member of the University community is expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty. A student shall not receive credit for work that is not the product of the student’s own effort.” Examples of penalties for a student found responsible for an infringement of academic honesty are no credit for the work in question, failure in the course, and the traditional range of conduct sanctions from disciplinary warning through permanent dismissal from the University.
