Contact at UNJLC is [email protected].

On Plastic Sheeting  Currently three types of Plastic Sheeting are used and which are provided through (UNICEF, UNHCR, and USAID);  UNHCR and UNICEF Plastic Sheeting types come as individual wraps with mounting holes hence are easy to use;  USAID/OFDA provided type comes in big pieces (100X24) and can be divided into ten sheets; since this type does not have holes for mounting, it is harder to use. But because of its size it offers more versatility and can be used for different purposes e.g. fencing, latrines, or for preparing assembling or public area, clinics, schools;

Mosquito Nets

 Like soap, mosquito nets are not officially part of the NFI basket but rather distributed in an ad hoc manner;  Malaria Consortium has in stock 30,000 mosquito nets available in Khartoum and ready for distribution to malaria infested regions. NGO interested in this item can contact Adrienne Rashford at a.rashford@malariaconsortium .org;  Malaria Consortium discussed the advantages of treated Mosquito nets vis-à-vis ordinary Mosquito nets. Given the health advantaged of the former, it is suggested that this practice be mainstreamed; Malaria Consortium can lead this effort;  Distribution of Mosquito nets entails programmatic activities and therefore requires training on how to use them;  UNJLC suggested mainstreaming mosquito nets into the NFI program and the establishment of linking such mainstreaming with their proposed training of NGO partners;

Page 2 of 4

For more information check www.unjlc.org or send an email to [email protected]

Tents

 A question regarding the utility and appropriateness as well as advantages of tents over other forms of sheltering materials (in this case plastic sheeting) was raised;  Tents cost more than plastic sheeting but they are more durable and useful to the beneficiaries;  Goal has just distributed the first dispatches of tents and they have not yet received feed back. Post distribution assessment on the utility of tents would be available end of October;  Reports from SRCS suggests that Tents are not useful in their experiences;  JLC has in stock 500 tents but found hard to distribute.

Recommendations: A survey/study is needed on the use, appropriateness as well as the conception of tents among beneficiaries. Although tents are expensive, the group should investigate whether the use of tents as common shelter are beneficial in the long term;

Regional Updates from Partners- Distributions/Assessments

GOAL: Post distribution assessment will be released very soon by the organization some time in October; Once depleting their current stock, GOAL may re-stock their supplies for flood affected areas; Total number of assisted people is 60,000 individuals (12,000 HH);

TDH: Are done with their distribution activities;

IAS: Just finished their second round of distribution in S. Kordofan (Hamadi). In their 1st and 2nd distributions, the organization reached 1,555 HH with blankets and plastic sheeting. Currently they are planning for 2008 activities. Assessment for this is completed. Coordination in South Kordofan is reportedly to be a challenge;

Al-Asfia: Flood responses is still continuing activity; Information sharing is going well; Cooking tools/Mobil Kitchens is distributed to homeless population due to flood emergencies; Tents are distributed after receiving it from GoS;

Malaria Consortium: Sector Planning is in process and several drafts have been produced.

2008 Workplan Draft NFI Sector Plan is in progressing stage and almost ready to be sent out to the regions. Comments should focus on substantive and not superficial issues; UNJLC provided a review of the sheets and modalities of submitting project sheets;

Every Week Sector Report ARF biweekly Report will made into two pages doc. ARF report is strictly to the CP;

Government Information and the Common Pipe Line

Page 3 of 4

For more information check www.unjlc.org or send an email to [email protected]

 It has been reported that the Saudi Government has pledged 20 million dollars to the flood related emergency in Sudan. There was no clear information on how the donation will be used and who will be controlling it;  Since NFI CP will not be able to meet all the needs, the Sector Team needs to keep abreast on all donations by other governments to GoS or Civil Defense.

AOB Given the fact that flood season is almost over, the group decided to reconsider the frequency of its meetings. UNJLC will announce the date of next meeting.

Page 4 of 4

For more information check www.unjlc.org or send an email to [email protected]
