Cornwallis’s return for the battle shows 1,924 and does not include COL Hamilton’s 250 NC Volunteers and 120 British regulars detached from the army to guard the baggage. Casualties suffered at the mid-morning fight at New Garden would have reduced the beginning figure to around 1,900 at battle time. 2 The light infantry company of the 82nd of Foot was attached to Cornwallis’s army. The rest of the regiment garrisoned Charleston. 3 A document in the Cornwallis Papers lists several men of this regiment among the wounded. The 7th Regiment of Foot (Royal Fusiliers) had been technically captured at Cowpens in January 1781, but several must have escaped or some had stayed with the main army in Winnsborough, SC, (sick, etc.?) and missed being captured in that battle. A 7th Regiment button was found near Yorktown, VA. 4 The Marylanders were reorganized by Greene in January 1781 into two units. The First included all remnants of the six regiments sent from Washington’s Army in 1780. The Second Maryland was Greene’s designation for the Maryland Regiment Extra recruited in that state in 1780 for service with the Southern Army. Guilford was the Second’s first real battle test. 5 The Delaware Regiment was divided. CPT Robert Kirkwood’s company of infantry was attached to William Washington’s dragoons to create a legion. The other company under CPT Peter Jacquett was assigned to the Maryland Brigade. 6 These 100 newly-raised NC Continental infantrymen are believed to have been assigned as a guard to Singleton’s Continental artillery placed on the first line and then withdrawn to the third line (research on-going). “Thackston” is sometimes misspelled “Axton”. 7 COL William Washington’s unit was made up of infantry and cavalry. Most of the Virginia mounted militia were attached to his command. 8 The two brigades of NC Militia likely contained men of militia units of nearby counties to those named. Some NC Militia units may have had assignments to other units. 9 The two brigades of VA Militia likely contained men of militia units of nearby counties to those named. Some VA Militia units or men from these counties may have had assignments to other units. 10 Henry County militia participants have been traditionally associated to the battle by the March 11, 1781 roll by COL Abram Penn, however this is no evidence that any Henry County militia companies arrived in time for the battle. Other historical evidence (pension application accounts, etc.) shows that the Henry County men arrived after the battle. How many, if any, were in the battle is unknown. 11 Pension applications of several men from Amherst County indicate that the three companies of CPT James Franklin, CPT James Dilliard and CPT Younger Landrum did not arrive in time for the battle, but were close enough to hear the sound of guns and witness the retreat. After the battle, some of the Amherst men were placed under CPT Younger Landrum and assigned to BG Robert Lawson’s Brigade; the rest under COL Charles Lynch. 12 BG (“COL”) William Campbell’s Virginia riflemen were attached to LTC Henry Lee and positioned on the left wing of the first line. Campbell had, according to pension applicants, several Virginia and North Carolina Militia companies under his command. 13 COL Charles Lynch’s Virginia riflemen were positioned on the right wing of the first line with COL Washington’s “Corps of Observation”.</p>
