Diversity Lesson Plan

Goal/Objective:

Students will learn about diversity by researching about athletes from different

racial, ethnical or religious backgrounds and present to the class by using a power

point presentation.

Equipment:

Computer lab

Focus:

How many of you have favorite athletes?

Do you know where that athlete was born? Was it in the USA or another

country?

How many athletes can you think of are from other countries?

Teacher Input:

This research project is so that the students will understand how many athletes in

today’s professional sports leagues come from different backgrounds and

countries. The students will research athletes with different backgrounds so they

will understand that not everyone is raised the same way. They will also look into

the hardships the athlete had growing up and what obstacles they had to overcome

to succeed in their sport.

Guided Practice:

What hardships do you think your athlete might have had?

Did coming to the USA help that athlete succeed? Independent Practice:

*You will have the same computer groups as you did for the health research

project.

* You will use the internet to research an athlete that has a different racial, ethnic

or religious background that you.

* You will find out information about this athlete and put it together in a

presentation using power point.

*You will present to the class your research.

Closure:

What athlete did you choose?

Did you find that he/she had a hard time growing up?

How did your athlete differ from other athletes on his/her team?

Reflection:

I felt this lesson was a wonderful way for students to express themselves and show some creativity. It also allowed the students to research athletes from different backgrounds and showed how diversity is a good thing.

Modification for visually impaired:

In my physical education class, there is a child with a visual impairment. To assist with this child’s computer needs, a few modifications were made. I went into control panel and selected accessibility options. From there, I again selected accessibility options then selected display. Using the display, I was able to slow down the blinking rate of the cursor and make the cursor wider so the student could see the cursor. I was also able to increase the font on the computer by using high contrast and adjusting the settings to make the font large and black.
