The Middle Colonies  New Netherlands & New Sweden original outposts.  Dutch took New Sweden, but lost New Netherlands to England 1664.  Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, & Delaware.</p><p>A. Precursors: New Netherland & New Sweden 1. Few Dutch; Germans, French, Scandinavians, and Africans. 2. Multiple religions: Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims. 3. Privatized fur trading—large amounts of guns traded for fur. a. Depletion of furs and small pox = low #’s of Natives b. Local Iroquois banned with Huron to fight against French. c. “Beaver Wars”—struggle between greedy colonists & local Natives. 4. New Netherland governor requested attacks against Natives (Kieft’s War) 5. 1638—Sweden planted a colony along the Delaware River a. Friendly will local Natives, diverted furs from going to New Netherland b. 1655—Over taken by Dutch c. Both had large populations & Sweden developed the log cabin</p><p>B. English Conquests: New York & New Jersey 1. Proprietary colonies awarded by King Charles II to wealthy. 2. New Netherland surrendered 1664 extending land to Hudson. 3. Duke of York (King’s Brother), claimed royal colony in 1685 after becoming King. a. Immigration: New England, Britain, and France = population. b. Land given to wealthy English & Dutch. c. New York patroons—manor lords became rich with rent from land. 4. New Jersey—land of New Netherlands granted to William Penn, John Lord Berkley, & Sir Philip Carteret. a. Sold hard to settle land to Quakers—Split in West & East Jersey b. Religious groups in NJ—Quakers, Anglicans, Puritans, Presbyterians, Dutch Calvinists, & Swedish Lutherans. c. 1702—New Jersey’s problems forced proprietors to make it a royal colony.</p><p>C. Quaker Pennsylvania 1. William Penn (1644-1718) “Penns Woods” a. Place for Quakers—Teachings by George Fox “Society of Friends”  Poor men & women  “Inner Light” or the Holy Spirit—inspiration by God, but not the word of God.  Did not follow the “norms” of society and thought people should be equally treated for their worship and not wealth. b. Many immigrated for religious tolerance & economic stability. 2. PA Government a. Executive Branch (governor) & lower legislative chamber (assembly) b. Appointed Quakers to positions, but watched carefully over land and government. c. Created a grid system to equally distribute lands d. Friendly with small Delaware Natives insisting on buying land it needed. 3. Good farm land, growing season, and demand from Indians for grain. 4. Bickering over government and taxes. 5. George Keith proposed to change Quaker creed a. Train ministers—change dynamics of all Quakers being equal. b. Took ideas to England taking many with him—declining Quaker power in PA. c. 1704—Swedes & Dutch took over the best lands separating into the colony of Delaware. 6. No Middle Colony forced taxes paid to the church and encouraged toleration. </p>
