Course: EFL 074-01 – Reading IV Instructor: Karen Stanley Text: Making Connections: A Strategic Approach to Academic Reading, 2nd ed. by Kenneth J. Pakenham [ ISBN 0-521-54284-7 ]

Course objectives: Using high-intermediate level reading materials: 1. Skim and scan to locate particular types of information. 2. Identify main ideas and supporting information. 3. Infer, apply, and evaluate information from readings in writing, in class discussions and/or in online discussions. 4. Use strategies to build academic vocabulary and deduce word meanings from context. 5. Identify and explain sequences through pronoun references, transitions, and time progression and their functions in academic readings. 6. Answer short answer questions which require comprehension of content. 7. Write short summaries of academic material based on recognition of main ideas and supporting details. 8. Recognize and understand cohesive devices.

The schedule below is a general idea of what we will do each week. However, we may make changes throughout the semester.

Weeks 1-4 Introduction to the course Unit 1: World Health in the Twenty-first Century Summary, "Medicine and Genetic Research" (pages 23-24) Content Quiz (Testing Center) Vocabulary Quizzes (online) Extra credit reading: Desirée's Baby Test 1

Weeks 5-8 Unit 2: Living in a Multicultural Society Summary, "Who are Today's Immigrants?" (p 70-71) Content Quiz (Testing Center) Vocabulary Quizzes (online) Extra credit reading: The Man to Send Rainclouds Midterm Exam (= Test 2)

Weeks 9-12 Unit 3: Aspects of Language Summary, "Child Language Acquisition: Phonology" (pages 134-136) Extra credit test (Testing Center) Vocabulary Quizzes (online) Week 12-15 Unit 4: Looking After Planet Earth Summary, "Ecology, Overpopulation, and Economic Development" (pages 185-187) Test 3

Week 16 Final Exam

Grades: Tests, including Midterm and Final Exam = 60% Summaries and other homework = 25% Quizzes = 10% Attendance = 5%

Quizzes: Because some students do not complete reading homework, in addition to scheduled quizzes, the teacher may occasionally give a surprise quiz at the beginning of class. There will be no makeups for any type of quiz. Students who are absent or come late will lose the opportunity to take the quiz. However, at the end of the semester, your lowest quiz grade (from all the quizzes) will be dropped; if you have a zero for a quiz, that is the one that will be dropped.

Attendance: - Students who miss more than 30% of class meetings cannot receive a grade above D (and therefore will not be able to take the next level of reading). - Students who come to class more than 10 minutes late (or leave the classroom for more than 10 minutes during class, or leave more than 10 minutes early) are welcome, but will not receive credit for attendance for that class. - If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed. I will help as much as I can, but it is always a good idea to have at least 2 people in the class who you can contact for information. - Do not just stop coming to class. If, for some reason, you cannot continue in the class, be sure to withdraw officially. (NOTE that the last day for withdrawal is at the 35% point of the semester.) Otherwise, you will probably receive a grade of F for the class. The grades you receive for your Academic ESL classes appear on your transcript and count as part of your official GPA (Grade Point Average).

Tests: Only students who have completed and turned in all homework on time, who have a passing grade (C or better) on all quizzes and previous tests, and who have not missed more than 3 classes (for the midterm) or 6 classes (for the final) will qualify to makeup a missed test. In addition, the student must have documentation of an extreme emergency.

Homework: Homework which is turned late will receive one grade lower for each day that it is late. You CAN send homework via email. However, if I do not receive your email for any reason, it is your responsibility. Homework more than 4 days late will be given a zero.
