Criteria for the Viscosity Lab

Criteria for the Viscosity Lab

Writing the Viscosity and Density Labs

The worksheet you have completed on Viscosity will be used as a basic framework for a formal lab report. You will use the “rubric for a scientific report” to complete the assignment. Also, use the following specific criteria for the viscosity lab:

1. Include the following headings: Purpose (1-2 sentences); Materials (bulleted list); Procedure (3rd person, past tense!); Observations (see below); Discussion (see below); Conclusion (List fluids from fastest to slowest, and make a 1 sentence statement explaining the list)

2. Title: Fluid Race OR Viscosity Lab

3. Procedure: List each step in a numbered list, using third person, past tense. Discuss how your group did their first trial with attention to detail. After this, note that the procedure was repeated three times and the average result was found from the three trials. Add also that the procedure was repeated for each of the 6 fluids.

4. Observations: Create a chart with the following headings: Fluid type; distance (cm); time (s); viscosity (cm/s); average viscosity. You MUST calculate viscosity for each of the 6 fluids!

5. Discussion: Answer the 2 questions on the back of your instruction sheet, namely: How could this experiment be improved (with a focus on accuracy); Discuss why you think some materials are more viscous than others, using the particle theory.

The worksheet you have completed on Density will be used as a basic framework for a formal lab report. You will use the “rubric for a scientific report” to complete the assignment. Also, use the following specific criteria for the viscosity lab:

1. Repeat #1 (from above)

2. Title: Density Lab

3. Procedure: List each step in a numbered list, using third person, past tense. Discuss how your group did their first trial with attention to detail. Whether your group found the density of both a solid or a liquid, you must do a procedure for both, as they differ in how you find the density of these 2 different states of matter!

4. Observations: Create a chart using the headings on the worksheet. You MUST calculate density for all of the substances we observed!

5. Discussion: Answer questions # 1, 3, 4 on the back of your instruction sheet
