Hydrogen production via steam reforming of bio-oil model compounds

over NixMgyO solid solution Xiang Luo1, Edward Lester2, Tao Wu1, * 1 Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, The University of Nottingham Ningbo China, 315100, China 2 Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, The University of Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7 2RD, UK

Abstract

Different methods were employed for the development of the Ni xMgyO solid-solution.

The NixMgyO was also doped with promoting elements (i.e., Co, Ce and La) for the boosting of hydrogen yields and depression of coking in steam reforming of bio-oil model compounds.

In this research, N2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) were applied for the characterization of both fresh and used catalysts to understand their compositions, morphology, and surface metallic interactions. For the carbon deposition study, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectra were employed to examine the spent catalysts. The enhancements of carbon depression were observed on the catalysts with additives of Ce and La. It could be attributed to their abundant oxygen vacancy defects and CO2 capture ability. The oxygen vacancy provides free oxygen for carbon gasification on the surface of catalyst and accelerates the rate of Alpha-carbon removal. This kind of behavior could avoid the accumulation of monatomic Alpha-carbon and slow down the formation of Beta- and Gamma-carbon. In the results, the modified catalysts showed the higher conversion of ethanol, HAc, Phenol above 90mol% and also the higher hydrogen yield above 80mol%. In the meantime, the investigation of the productivity of monocarbonaceous gases (CO2, CO and CH4) indicated that all three promoters can enhance water-gas shift reaction and depress methanation at high temperature condition (973 K).

Keywords: hydrogen production, steam reforming, Nickel, bio-oil, solid solution

Acknowledgement: Ningbo Bureau of Science and Technology (Innovation Team Scheme, 2012B82011, and Major Research Scheme, 2012B10042).
