Free HCM Data User Guide

Free HCM data user guide

The free HCM TOPO and MORPHO data are converted using GTOPO30 and SRTM3 data. Where SRTM3 data is available, it is used else GTOPO30 data is taken. The coverage area is the whole world.

To create your HCM database you need at least the TOPO data. The additional use of MORPHO data is recommended. If you do calculations to (border-) lines, the BORDER data is also required (see description for BORDER data).

It is strongly recommended to store these data on a local hard-disk. Network-disks are possible, but the network load can be very high and the calculation time will be longer.

If for example your local disk D is used to store all the required data, you need to create directories

D:\TOPO D.\MORPHO D:\BORDER

Then you have to determine the coverage area of your data. The data has to cover your country and an additional area approximately 100 km outside your country (for the Fixed Service 200 - 400 km). You need to find the Latitudes and Longitudes of the required area(s).

All TOPO and MORPHO data is stored in files covering a 1 x 1 degree area. The name of each file is build using the south / west corner of the 1 x 1 degree area. The area from 40 degrees North to 41 degrees North and from 10 degrees East to 11 degrees East e.g. is named E010N40.

All data of one Longitude-strip is stored in a subdirectory with the name of this Longitude, e.g. D:\TOPO\E010 (and D:\MORPHO\E010).

The data of one Longitude strip is stored in 1 to 4 zip-files for easy download. You have to download the required data and to unzip it in the correct subdirectory. Files you don’t need can be deleted (if it is only 1 zip-file, you get all data from North- to South-pole, 391 MB).
