Sketchbook HW Assignment - Contour Still-life Drawing (30 pts.)

Consider the strategies you’ve learned in class for accurately drawing the contour of any object. This exercise will allow you to practice these techniques and improve your drawing skills. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Project Goal: Create a contour line drawing in your sketchbook of a still-life consisting of at least 3 objects. Contour sketches only use line, so DO NOT include any shading.

Requirements:  Arrange at least 3 objects in an interesting way on a flat surface (a table or the floor would work fine). When you arrange the objects, they should be overlapping or interacting with each other somehow (see examples above)

1 object should be symmetrical and have a cylindrical form o bottle, cup, mug, stemware, glass, etc. 1 object should be organically-shaped so it can be drawn using the 5 basic shapes. o shoe, stuffed animal, ceramic statue, etc. The third object can be anything you want! If you’d like to challenge yourself, this is the time to do so. Suggestion: Try drawing a rectangular prism (book, iPod, tissue box, etc.).

 Use a 9x12 sketchbook page and a pencil to do your drawing, focusing on maintaining correct proportions of the objects. Try to fill the page with your drawing! You must fit most of all 3 objects on your page (they can exit the page, if necessary), but DO NOT draw them teeny tiny in the middle of the page.

 Sit slightly higher than the still-life, and do not change position of where you are sitting during the drawing! This will affect your perspective.

 Add obvious interior details to give the objects visual interest. Do not make anything up from your imagination! You should draw only what you observe. (Details could include: handles on cups, patterns, etc.)

 Don’t include anything extra in the foreground or background (like a tablecloth or wallpaper). Leave negative space around the objects.
