<p>Chabot College February 1996</p><p>Course Outline for Theater Arts 10 INTRODUCTION TO THEATER ARTS</p><p>Catalog Description</p><p>10 - Introduction to Theater Arts 3 units</p><p>The dramatic arts, including the history, values, and theatrical techniques that have shaped them. 3 hours. Strongly recommended: eligibility for English 1A or 52A.</p><p>Expected Outcomes for Students:</p><p>Upon completion of the course, the student should:</p><p>1. have developed interest and understanding in the dramatic arts, including the history, values, and theatrical techniques that have shaped them; 2. through an analysis of representative plays, and attendance at Bay Area theaters and art cinemas, be expected to undergo a series of reading and viewing experiences which will develop an appreciation of the dramatic arts; 3. be moved to see good plays on own initiative.</p><p>Course Content:</p><p>1. Theater Arts as one of the arts 2. Ritual, magic and drama 3. The nature of drama 4. The elements of drama 5.* Tragedy and melodrama 6.* Comedy and farce 7.* Styles: realism, naturalism, expressionism, theater of the absurd, epic, etc. 8.* The playwright 9. The director 10. The actor 11. Theatre architecture, scene, and lighting design 12 Cinema art 13. The audience *Play Readings Assigned</p><p>Methods of Presentation:</p><p>1. Lectures/discussion 2. Student participation in creative projects 3. Concert readings of selected plays 4. Play readings are selected to coincide with professional and university productions offered in the Bay Area.</p><p>Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:</p><p>1. Class participation 2. Quizzes 3. Essays 4.
