UT Southwestern Healthcare Fellowship

UT SOUTHWESTERN HEALTH CARE FELLOWSHIP

I believe that government policy is best made by individuals with practical, daily experience in the area being governed. Therefore, I am a vocal advocate of the medical community participating in the creation of health policy.

To this end, together with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, I have created a fellowship position within my office. This one-year position is open to UTSW students and recent graduates, to allow them to participate in health policy at the federal level. The Healthcare Fellow works directly under my Legislative Director, sharing in all health-related tasks - from answering mail to helping draft legislation.

The current Fellow is Dr. Kimberly Stump. Dr. Stump is a recent graduate of UTSW who just matched for a joint residency program in family and preventive medicine at Dartmouth. The program offers residents the chance to earn a Masters in Public Health, and is specifically geared to those who seek to facilitate change in health systems while simultaneously completing their clinical work. She is originally from Georgetown, TX, and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Genetics.

Next year’s Fellow will be Ms. Kelly Spence. Ms. Spence has completed her first year of medical school at UTSW. Her interest in politics began in high school, where she participated in the JROTC program. She attended the University of North Texas and majored in Political Science, while working as an EMT. We look forward to working with her.

Related links: UTSW fellowship website
