<p> Banff Academy COURSE INFORMATION Subject Scots Language Level 3-6 Equivalent N3-Higher Main Topics History and development of the Scots Language; Understanding and Communicating Scots. Covered Exploration of written Scots, poetry, songs, weather, landscape, culture, links with other languages, different dialects around Scotland, with a focus on Doric. Links wi ither leids, the mony an muckle dialecks o Scots, wi a parteecular deek at Doric. Methodolog Pupils explore Scots through a wide variety of methods and resources including TV, media y clips, radio, websites, books, poems, dictionaries and apps. There is a lot of scope for pupils to bring their own knowledge of Scots to the class. Personal projects allow pupils to research what they are interested in, and express themselves in Scots. Projects are organised to link with local community – e.g. Duff House, Salmon Bothy. There is also a growing institutional link with the Elphinstone Institute at Aberdeen University. In addition pupils will be paired with another school to exchange a knowledge of Doric with other dialects in Scotland, in a project called Keen tae Ken yer Kin. Assessment Assessment varies from written assessments, to group work tasks, posters, leaflets, projects and assessment of spoken Scots. The Award can help pupils with the skills they need to progress through levels in other subjects. Additional A pass at this Award gains pupils 12 SCQF points. Information Useful qualification for pupils wishing to go on to employment in media, language, culture. Helps pupils develop empathy with other cultures, whilst building confidence in their own. </p>
