<p> SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT FOR HONORS ENGLISH IV Jane Eyre</p><p>ASSIGNMENT FORMAT: All writing associated with this assignment must be typed and turned in to turnitin.com. The teacher will also require a hard copy printed out. Be sure to label and arrange your assignments in the order given. </p><p>I. Relate the novel to another novel in a 2 to 2 ½ page (double spaced) essay. (Be as specific as possible.)</p><p> Example: Look at relationships (i.e. Parent to child, man to woman, or friend to friend) and the way they affect one of the themes of a novel. You could compare the relationship of Jane and Rochester in Jane Eyre to that of Gatsby and Daisy in The Great Gatsby.</p><p> Example: You could also look at the way that minor characters play large roles in the development of the plot of the novel. In The Great Gatsby the character Jordan Baker is often used by the author to give the reader details that he/she may not have known otherwise.</p><p>II. Relate the novel to a world event or to an event or circumstance in your own life in a 2 to 2 ½ page (double spaced) essay. (Be as specific as possible.)</p><p> Example: Worldwide there is an issue with child abuse and neglect. In many ways Jane’s upbringing can be viewed as abusive. You could discuss how Jane’s abuse is similar to many children in the system today.</p><p> Example: Everyone has a time in school when he/she felt singled out and mistreated by a teacher or two. You could discuss how Jane’s experience at school is similar to your own experience.</p><p>III. For the characters listed below, find quotes that show both direct and indirect characterization. You should have at least 2 quotes for each and you should explain in a short paragraph what type of characterization is shown. Discuss what the author is telling you about the character with the quote.
