Media Release June 5, 2000

WHAT YOU CAN DO ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Today, on World Environment Day, Cr………., Mayor of XYZ has called on residents of XYZ to remember that the Drain is Just for Rain and to dispose of gardening materials, paints and cigarettes appropriately.

Cr ………..….. said, “If we all remember that the Drain is Just for Rain, then the waterways in which we swim, fish and sail will be so much cleaner.

“There are many things that we can do during our everyday life to ensure that only clean water goes down the drain, whether it is in the garden, around the house or washing the car.”

XYZ Council recently won a $… grant from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to……….

The grant is part of the State Government’s three-year, $60 million campaign to tackle urban stormwater pollution head-on.

Cr…………………’s statement marks Council’s commitment to improving the quality of our waterways.

Cr………. said, “At home we can help the environment by sweeping gutters and driveways regularly, composting or mulching leaves and grass clippings. It’s also important to cover piles of soil, sand or mulch to stop them washing into drains. And, although it is tempting, never use a hose as a broom.

“DIY enthusiasts can clean paint brushes over grass or soil when using acrylic paints. Oil-based paints, turpentine and solvents should be kept well clear of gutters and drains. Of course, any unused paint can be allowed to dry out and the residue put in the bin.

“To protect the environment, when we are washing cars, its best to do it on a grassy area or over gravel, using minimal detergent. Rather than a hose, a bucket is better and soapy water can be emptied down the sink or toilet. Of course, there are many service stations and car washes that recycle water.

“Cigarette butts are also bad for our waterways, so why not put them in the bin rather than the road, and on World Environment Day, why not pick up other peoples’ litter in the park or on the street and put it in the bin too?”

ENDS

For media inquiries M…….. @ XYZ Council Tel: (02) ……………..
