Project description: In 3-4 sentences, describe the project and its main objectives.</p><p>APEC WES aimed to galvanize the Asia-Pacific community to unleash the potential of women entrepreneurs and business leaders to boost economic growth and development in this region. In addition to official delegations to the SMEs Ministerial Meeting on October 2nd and 3rd, the WES supported women entrepreneurs from each of the 21 APEC economies, bringing together 150 international participants in Japan. Our objective was to promote and foster the growth of women entrepreneurs in the Asia-Pacific region through policy discussions, networking, advocacy, and capacity building activities. Senior government officials and private sector participants were to help inform innovative strategies to strengthen women entrepreneurs’ participation and contributions to the region’s economic growth.</p><p>2. Meeting your objectives: Describe how the project went, with reference to the objectives laid out in your project proposal. Include any major changes to your project as proposed and any problems or obstacles that you encountered and how you overcame them. </p><p>The APEC Women’s Entrepreneurship Summit (WES) effectively carried out its mission to promote the Asia Pacific region’s future prosperity through the inclusion of women at all levels in the business and economic sectors. The WES participants shared ideas, identified best practices to address obstacles to entrepreneurship, established a comprehensive WES networking portal, and pledged to meet again in the United States in 2011 under APEC auspices to assess progress and further this initiative.</p><p>The one day, high-level APEC WES focused on the following topics: engendering entrepreneurship in the Asia-Pacific region, public-private partnerships to close gender gap for economic growth, innovation for business growth and networking, and commitments and community engagement. There were also break-out sessions devoted to identifying the best practices to obtain access to markets, financial services, technologies, and skills enhancement and scaling up. </p><p>3. Project evaluation: Describe how you evaluated the project and provide some details on the results of the evaluation (e.g. participant evaluation, peer review of publication, measurement of indicators, statistics demonstrating use of outputs etc.). APP ENDI X G C O M P L E T I O N R E P O R T</p><p>With the APEC Women’s Entrepreneurship Summit, we were hoping to bring the importance of women’s economic empowerment in the Asia-Pacific region to the limelight. The APEC WES was a success, as it has created the foundation for the future high-level policy dialogue on Women and the Economy, taking place September 2011 in San Francisco, California, USA. </p><p>4. Key findings: Describe one or two examples of important findings arising from the project (e.g. results from surveys or case studies, insights provided by participants or experts, policy recommendations, roadblocks to progress on an issue etc.).</p><p>APEC WES participants exchanged ideas and developed policy recommendations for best practices, including the following:</p><p> Create a business matching program to place women entrepreneurs in the Asia- Pacific region in key industries  Increase women’s access to financing and micro-financing  Promote public-private cooperation to train, mentor, and educate women entrepreneurs and business leaders  Publicize women’s economic successes and related best practices  Expand government initiatives aimed at women entrepreneurs.</p><p>5. Next steps: Describe any follow-up steps or projects that you recommend. Have you already planned or begun these? What role could APEC play in any follow-up? </p><p>While the US hosts the APEC meetings for 2011, the US government is working closely together to form a high-level policy dialogue on “Women and the Economy.” This dialogue will take place September of next year in San Francisco, and will be in joint succession with the annual meetings of the Women Leaders Network (WLN) and the Gender Focal Point Network (GFPN). </p><p>Participants sponsored by the Department of State and APEC were provided with a “Participant Booklet”, containing the biographies and contact information of their colleagues also sponsored by the Department of State and APEC. </p><p>6.
