Furniss</p><p>To: Station Director, PNW</p><p>Water is a fundamental natural resource critical to sustaining the life and health of humans and ecosystems. The Forest Service provides hydrology management, leadership, research, and stewardship expertise for protecting, maintaining, improving, and restoring surface and ground water resources. Through these efforts, the Forest Service sustains the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.</p><p>The Wagon Wheel Gap Award recognizes a high level of performance by hydrologists and hydrologic technicians in all branches of the Forest Service who are engaged in watershed management on National Forests and Grasslands or in the Regional Offices, or conducting watershed research at laboratories or in Stations, the IITF, or in delivery of hydrologic services to domestic or overseas partners as part of their normal duties. This award is named in honor of the first watershed experiments in the United States at the Wagon Wheel Gap Experimental Forest on the Rio Grande National Forest.</p><p>I am pleased to announce that Michael J. Furniss has been selected to receive the 2006 Wagon Wheel Gap Award for excellence in hydrology. We are presenting three awards for 2006, one within each Deputy area: Research, State and Private Forestry, and the National Forest System. Mr. Furniss is being honored for his outstanding achievement and demonstrated ability to serve as a crucial bridge between Research, the National Forest System, and Forest Service partners. The other two award recipients include Greg S. Bevenger, National Forest System, and Albert H. Todd, State and Private Forestry. We will be contacting these award recipients about a ceremony date and location being planned for an appropriate venue.</p><p>We extend our sincere congratulations to Michael and thank the Pacific Northwest Station for highlighting his contribution to our Agency’s successful demonstration of outstanding stewardship of our Nation’s water resources.</p><p>/s/ Steve Segovia (for) ANNE J.
