Work will be available in the office after 3:00 PM.

Birthdays Birthdays are always a happy occasion for children and we recognize our students on their special day. If you wish, students may share a small birthday treat with classmates. A birthday treat must be small and pre-cut. The treat will be eaten at either recess or lunch. Please make sure that treats include healthy choices and please contact teacher for any student food allergies. Birthday treats may not interfere with the instructional program. Birthday cakes, parties, pizza lunches, balloons, toys, goodie bags, drinks, etc… ARE NOT permitted. Again, if bringing a treat to school after 8:45 AM, you are asked to drop the treat at the office and either your child will be called to pick-up the treat or someone from the office will deliver to the classroom. Birthday party invitations MAY NOT be distributed in school.

1 Bully Prevention Program The Central Dauphin School District has adopted a research-based bullying prevention program designed to reduce and prevent bully/victim problems. Bullying is when one child or a group of children repeatedly hurt another child through words or actions. Direct bullying behavior can include but is not limited to physical aggression, name-calling, teasing or making threats. Indirect forms of bullying can include but is not limited to deliberate exclusion or spreading rumors. Our bullying prevention plan is school-wide, encompassing all students in all grade levels and all the adults who have contact with them. This program is used at the classroom level by holding regular classroom meetings about bullying and peer relations. It is also used at an individual level where meetings are held with the children who bully and who are bullied as well as meeting with parents of affected students. Our goal is to teach students acceptance of others, positive assertive behavior, and problem-solving.

School Pledge Against Bullying I will be an honest responsible reporter. I will choose not to be a bully. I will help others who are being bullied by speaking out and getting adult help. I will include all students in school activities.

Cafeteria (Breakfast - $1.15; Lunch-$2.25) - All lunch money must be deposited on a student’s account in the morning upon arrival. - Parents can also access the online account via the district website to deposit money. Click on the “Administration” link at the top of the page and then click on the “Cafeteria” link on the dropdown screen and then “Meals Plus/Lunch Prepay Online Account Access” and follow the directions to set up an account. Trading or sharing food is not permitted. - Students are expected to use appropriate table manners. - Students must eat lunch - Carbonated drinks and glass bottles are not permitted in the cafeteria or on the bus.

Car Rider Arrival Procedures Starting at 8:45 a.m., you may drop off your child at the lower porch of the school. After 9:00, your child must be accompanied to the office through the main entrance (upper level). Your child will be marked tardy.

Form a single line of cars beginning at the lower porch for drop-off. Do not double park to drop off your child, as it is very dangerous to allow children to walk between cars. Please pull up as far as you can along the curb.

Do not leave your car unattended in the drop-off area, even for a few minutes. This backs up the drop-off line. If you need to come in the building, park in the main parking lot on the upper level.

. Car Rider Afternoon Dismissal Procedures (New for 2015-2016) Students who are car pick-ups will begin being dismissed at 3:40. Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes prior to this. At dismissal time, teachers cross reference assigned pick-up numbers on approaching cars to the list of students, and then call children (who are seated in the lobby) to the pick-up area. 2 Only cars with official West Hanover car pick-up cards will be allowed to pick up children.

If you do not have your assigned pick-up number on the school issued card you will be asked to sign-in in the office to pick up your child. Make sure your child knows your car pick-up number and listens carefully in order to be in the right spot when you arrive. Numbers may change annually as our population changes. It is imperative that the official West Hanover car pick-up card is used.

If your child is not available when you arrive at the car pick-up area you may be asked to pull ahead to the playground area to wait for your child. This helps prevent excessive delays while teachers relocate children to the right place.

While waiting in line:

Please remain in your vehicle as you will need to move up frequently.

Please pull up as far as you can along the curb and close to the car in front of you.

Your number cards will be mailed to you prior to the start of the school year. Please display one on the passenger side of your car and make sure it can be easily seen. Another one can be given to your child to keep in his/her backpack. You are the only one in the school who has this number for the 2015-2016 school year. Extra numbers have been included so you may share them with others who may pick up your child. Thank you for your cooperation and patience!

Cell Phones No elementary student shall have on, turn on, or have visible, a communication device during the academic school day (Central Dauphin School District Code of Conduct.) It is highly recommended that your children does not bring a cell phone or other electronic devices to school, as we are not responsible if they are damaged, lost or stolen. We also ask that parents do not use their cell phones in front of the students if visiting the building.

Classroom Parties In accordance with Central Dauphin School Board policy, 4 classroom parties are held each year: Halloween, December Holiday, Valentine’s Day, and the End-of-Year. Room parents will be contacted by the West Hanover PTA to coordinate and organize the different parties. Parties will be open to only those parents assigned by the PTA. Parent volunteers at the parties are limited to 4 parents per room. Please volunteer early to insure your participation in at least one party. Pre-school students and other siblings are not permitted at these parties.

Clothing/Lost & Found Each year, many articles are left unclaimed at school. Many children cannot identify what they have lost. Please label coats, jackets, mittens, boots, etc… All remaining items are donated to charity at the end of the school year. Communication Email has changed the way that people communicate with one another. In our school world there are specific times when a written note by a parent or legal guardian can only be accepted, such as the following: 3

1. Excusal from school must be in the form of a written, signed note. The reason for the absence must be listed along with the date of absence. 2. Transportation changes/car rider notes must be in a written note. Email has not been reliable for timely, confirmed notification. 3. We need a note from you anytime your child’s transportation changes. If your child is a bus rider and will be a car rider one day a week we will need a note each week. If a child does not have a note, they will be sent home on the bus.

Detention A before-school detention program is held on Thursday mornings from 8:00 to 8:45 AM. Students may be assigned to detention for offenses of the Central Dauphin Student Code of Conduct, after 3 infractions for minor misbehavior, and for any offenses as determined by the Principal.

Discipline Please refer to the Central Dauphin Student Code of Conduct. Threats/Physical fights are serious offenses and may result in in-school or out-of-school suspension and notification to the police.

Dress Code Our school is a learning environment. To help promote a smooth learning process, student attire should ensure modesty and safety. Guidelines regarding student dress have been established using the input from many individuals. Clothing should be appropriate for school and not disrupt the educational process.

Please refer to the Central Dauphin School District Student Code of Conduct for a more detailed list of prohibited items.

Also, as a safety concern, all shoes must be tied in an appropriate manner. It is highly recommended that students DO NOT wear flip flops to school.

Thank you for your cooperation regarding school dress and West Hanover Elementary.

Educational Trips Central Dauphin School District policy permits students to take an educational trip and/or participate in educational activities, in accordance with district procedures. Please refer to the District calendar/handbook for more information. Educational Leave forms are available through our school office or on the district’s website. Forms are to be filled out PRIOR to the trip and approved PRIOR to the trip. No educational trips will be approved after the trip or during Testing dates for the PSSA’s. Please refer to the District Calendar for these dates.

Emergency Planning In the event of: - A school DELAY or School CLOSING o Parents will be notified by the use of School Messenger via phone and email if both are on our list. Parents can also listen to the television or radio stations for “Central Dauphin School District” school delay or closing information. The media will report the length of time of the delay at the start of the school day.

4 - An Early School CLOSING when students are already in session (Early Dismissal) o Parents will be notified by the use of our Global Connect via phone and email if both are on our list. Parents should also tune into local media stations for information. You should already have in place a plan for your child to follow should school be dismissed early. If you are not at home when your child arrives, what plan should your child follow? Make these arrangements now and review them often enough with your child so that he/she is familiar with the plan. In the event of an early dismissal, Kids Klub is cancelled and the students will either be car or bus riders and they need to know that before coming to school. - A school EVACUATION o In the event that it is necessary to evacuate our school, the children will be escorted to Life Point Church. We will dismiss students to their parent/guardian from this location. Students will not be dismissed to anyone other than the parent/guardian without parental permission. You will be asked to sign out your child before leaving the site. - A Three Mile Island Emergency o West Hanover Elementary is outside the evacuation zone and therefore our students will not be evacuated to another site.

In all of these cases please do not call the school. Follow these procedures and listen to the local media stations. Being proactive in our planning will reassure your child that the adults in his/her life have taken the necessary precautions for his/her safety and well-being. Take the steps today that will ease the concerns that arise when emergencies occur. Thank you for your support.

Homework Homework is assigned to reinforce learning that has occurred in the classroom. While homework in grades one through two is reasonable, children in grades three through five can expect 30-60 minutes several nights a week. Homework is reviewed in the classroom.

Instructional Support Team An Instructional Support Team is available to provide support to children who may be experiencing academic, social and/or emotional problems in school. Please contact the Instructional Support Teacher for more information regarding this program.

Participation in Extra-Curricular Events A child must be in school in order to attend/perform in concerts and other after school activities. Children who are sent home from school due to illness may not participate in after school activities. It is always a difficult decision to exclude a child; however experience has taught us that inevitably, the child becomes ill during the event. It is healthier for everyone if the child remains home.

Recess Recess provides an opportunity for students to relax and exercise. All students are expected to go outside unless excused for health reasons (ongoing requests to remain indoors may require a Doctor’s note) or for specific reasons by a teacher. Students staying inside for health reasons should remain seated and play quietly in the classroom and/or office. Recess will be held outdoors except on rainy days or when the temperature on site is determined to be too cold (below 25 degrees with wind chill). 5 Recess Rules 1. A temporary change in bus is not permissible unless an extreme emergency. A bus change is not permitted for after school social activities.

Use of Medication The school nurse and/or health room aide CANNOT dispense medication without a DOCTOR’S NOTE. Please do not ask the health room to dispense medications based on your personal requests. Refer to the District Calendar/Handbook. Visits to School All visitors must enter the building through the upper entrance at all times of the day. Upon entering the building, you must report to the main office, no exceptions. No one will be permitted to go directly to classrooms, etc… (whether before, during, or after the school day). Student safety is the utmost importance. Although time consuming, the above procedure 6 must be followed. Signs have been placed at all doorways to remind all visitors to report to the office. If you will be staying in the building you will be required to provide your Driver’s License and sign in at the main office and wear a visitor’s badge at all times.

Your cooperation regarding the following guidelines will maintain the instructional environment while providing you with a productive visit: 1. Prior arrangements should be made for classroom visits with the classroom teacher at least a day in advance. Please do not show up at the office indicating you are going to see a specific teacher if you did not make prior arrangements with the teacher.

2. Pre-school aged children and cameras are not permitted in the classroom/cafeteria during the instructional day. 3. Lunch visits by parents and legal guardians are permissible. If eating a school lunch we ask that the cafeteria staff be notified by 10:00 AM (a note to your child’s teacher or a call to the office). If you are bringing your lunch to school and sharing it with your child, we ask that you closely monitor food from outside vendors and avoid the carbonated drinks. 4. Due to our growing enrollment, we ask that if you would like to eat lunch with your child you limit it to once a marking period and/or your child’s birthday. 5. Birthday treats, instruments, “forgotten” homework items, etc… are to be dropped off in the office, not taken directly to the classroom. 6. All cell phones should be turned off or silenced when in the building and are not to be used anywhere in the building, including but not limited to the classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and playground.
