<p>1</p><p>Senior Service Project Instructions 2017-2018</p><p>To be eligible for graduation, each senior is required to perform at least 35 hours of community service by Monday, April 23, 2018. Hours to be completed after this date must be approved ahead of time by Mr. Merklinger. Seniors can serve in multiple projects within SHP or partner with an outside organization to gain hours. Students who fail to complete the Senior Service Project will not receive their diploma at graduation in May. </p><p>There are several steps needed to complete the Senior Service Project:</p><p>1. Forms and directions can be found on the school website: www.shp.org/faith/ministry/socialjustice</p><p>2. Proposal, Reflection Paper, PowerPoint and Time Sheets must be completed and submitted to Mr. Merklinger. </p><p>Note: Proposal, Reflection Paper and Time Sheets are to be hand delivered at the Campus Ministry office. PowerPoint is to be emailed to Mr. Merklinger – email: [email protected] </p><p>3. Keep track of your hours with written proof by organization supervisor. Mr. Merklinger and Faculty Advisor will contact your organization supervisor to verify hours.</p><p>4. Three deadlines must be completed:</p><p>A) Deadline #1 – Wednesday, October 11, 2017 (Senior Service Day)  Complete the Proposal Form and submit it to Mr. Merklinger  This form can be started as soon as possible</p><p>B) Deadline #2 –Wednesday, February 14, 2018 (Ash Wednesday)  Complete the First Reflection paper and submit it to Mr. Merklinger in the Campus Ministry office.  This paper can be started as soon as possible</p><p>C) Deadline #3 –Monday, April 23, 2018  Complete PowerPoint and email presentation to Mr. Merklinger  Deliver time sheets to Mr. Merklinger in the Campus Ministry office. 2</p><p>Senior Service Project Step #1: Preliminary Proposal (Due on Wednesday, October 11, 2017) Complete and submit to Mr. Merklinger in Campus Ministry</p><p>STUDENT INFORMATION</p><p>1. Briefly explain the organization and work you plan to do for your senior service project or have already completed. 2. Give two reasons for choosing this as your senior service project. How do you see this project as fitting the requirements? 3. What expectations and/or reservations do you have of this experience? (If you have already completed or have started the project, how you felt prior to beginning the project.)</p><p>For Teacher’s Use Project has been:</p><p>______Approved</p><p>______Conditionally Approved</p><p>______Not Approved 3</p><p>Senior Service Project Step #2: Reflection Paper (Due on Wednesday, February 14, 2018) Complete and submit to Mr. Merklinger in Campus Ministry</p><p>Read the article “Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions” found on the Service page of the school website: www.shp.org/faith/ministry/socialjustice</p><p>Choose two principles of Catholic Social Teaching found in the article. Explain how these principles relate to the service work that you are doing or have done. </p><p>Length: Reflections should be a minimum of 2 pages. (Use MLA formatting). </p><p>Return to Mr. Merklinger in Campus Ministry. This is due on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. </p><p>Analysis questions:</p><p> Why did you choose these principles?  What have you learned so far from this project?  What are the structural and personal realities that impact and possibly perpetuate the needs/injustices that your organization addresses?  How do politics, government, behaviors, society in general, etc., perpetuate these needs? 4</p><p>Senior Service Project Step #3: PowerPoint (Due on Monday, April 23 2018) Complete and email to [email protected]</p><p>For the third step of the Senior Service Project, you must develop and complete a PowerPoint. </p><p> Submit PowerPoint to Mr. Merklinger </p><p>Email: [email protected] by Monday, April 23, 2018. </p><p>Your development of slides must touch upon the following:</p><p> Background of the organization you served with  Project description  What did you learn from this project?  What did it feel like during the process of developing the project?  What did it feel like when you completed the project?  How did people respond to you?  What advice would you give someone doing this project for the first time?  What was the biggest challenge and how will you handle it differently next time?  What did the project tell you about yourself?  Catholic Social Teaching – which principle(s) did your project reflect? 5</p><p>Senior Service Project Time Sheet</p><p>You will document your volunteer hours with this sheet.
