<p> Four-Sentence Rhetorical Précis Format and Frame</p><p>Analytical Reading Process Pre-reading Questions Directions: Write answers to the following 10 questions before reading the text.</p><p>1. What is the title of the piece?</p><p>2. What is the genre (literary type) of the piece?</p><p>3. Who is the author of the piece?</p><p>4. What is the date of publication for the piece?</p><p>5. Who is the intended audience of the piece?</p><p>6. Make a prediction about the content and purpose of the story based on the title and the author.</p><p>7. Turn the title into a question. (You will answer the question after reading the article.)</p><p>8. Skim text for footnotes. List the subject of the footnotes. </p><p>9. Skim text for key terms (words and their synonyms that occur repeatedly and strategically throughout the text). List key terms.</p><p>10. Will the article be negative or positive in relation to the topic? Why or why not? RHETORICAL PRECIS FORMAT:</p><p>Sentence #1 will include the following:  Name of the author and (if possible: a phrase describing the credentials of the author)  The type (e.g. essay, lecture, research paper, etc.) and title of the work  The date, if available (inserted in parentheses)  A rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “suggest,” “imply,” “claim,” etc.) that describes what the author is doing in the text  A THAT clause in which you state the major assertion (thesis statement) of the author’s text</p><p>Sentence #2 will include the following:  An explanation of how the author develops and/or supports the thesis (such as by comparing and contrasting, narrating, illustrating, defining, etc.)  Present your explanation in the same chronological order that the items of support are presented by the author in the text</p><p>Sentence #3 will include the following:  A statement of the author’s purpose  Followed by an IN ORDER TO clause in which you explain what the author wants the audience to do or feel as a result of reading the work</p><p>Sentence #4 will include the following:  A description of the intended audience  A description of the tone the author uses RHETORICAL PRECIS FRAME:</p><p>1. ______, ______, in (author’s credentials) (author’s first and last name) his/her ______, argues that ______(type of text)</p><p>______.</p><p>2.
