This tree may grow to Order: Pinales 150 feet tall with a trunk diameter of three feet. Its crown is pyramid-shaped. The red-brown bark is Family: Pinaceae divided into plates. The dark-green needles, ILLINOIS STATUS arranged in clusters of two, may be six inches long. The male (staminate) flowers are in purple spikes up common, native to one-half inch long. The triangular seed may be up to one-eighth inch long with a wing about three-fourths inch long. BEHAVIORS The red pine may be found in north-central Illinois. It grows in dry, rocky woods.
