Fard3 1Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, 2Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, 3Research Center of Endovascular Intervention, Tehran, Iran</p><p>Objectives- To evaluate the prevalence of the renal artery stenosis in patients suspected having cardiovascular disease and to study the relationship between the vascular risks factors and this disease. Background-Renal artery stenosis is a frequent finding in patients with coronary artery disease. Although the prevalence of renal artery stenosis in Europe and America has been reported as high as 13.5-18% in patients with suspected coronary artery disease, there is limited information about the prevalence of the disease, in Iran. Methods and Results- We performed renal angiography in 301 patients (167 men and 134 women; mean age of 52.5 +/- 9.4 years) receiving diagnostic coronary angiography in three hospitals in Tehran, Iran since December 2006 to October 2007. Renal artery stenosis with stenotic diameter equal or more than 70% was considered significant. The prevalence of Renal artery stenosis was 6%( 18 of 301),including 15%(5) cases of unilateral stenosis and 3%(1)of bilateral stenosis. Among 301 patients underwent coronary artery angiography ,the prevalence of Renal artery stenosis was, 7%, 6%,10% and 3% in those with normal, single two and three - vessel disease, respectively. The prevalence in hypertensive patients was 7% in comparison to 3% in normotensive patients. p-value: 0.06 Conclusion-Our study showed that the renal artery stenosis is not a frequent finding in patients with established coronary artery disease, except in those with two-vessel disease. Also the current study demonstrated that there is not a very close relationship between renal artery stenosis and cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, positive family history of coronary artery disease and smoking.</p>
