<p>CIVICS COURSE SYLLABUS 2010-2011 Mr. Tony Saragas</p><p>Important Contact Information Planning/Office Time: 1:40 – 2:25 Email: [email protected]</p><p>Course Description</p><p>Civics will provide students the basic understanding of the necessity, construction and foundation of our government and political system, as well as the student's roles as a citizen within our society and system of government. Students will also address the fundamentals of our economic system and their involvement therein. This will require the coverage of basic cultural and social institutions within the US and beyond, so as to properly understand our position and impact in a global society and economy. </p><p>Primary Text: Gregory I. Massing's Civics in Practice: Principles of Government and Economics (2007) ISBN 0-03-042984-6. Students should be prompt, prepared and pleasant toward other students.</p><p>Materials: Spiral notebook with folder(s) for maintaining course notes and handouts, pens or pencils (pencils needed for graded assignments).</p><p>Tardies/Absences: One day for each absence/tardy to make-up work if excused; no make-up if unexcused. The make-up work is the student's responsibility. Late work, if unexcused, is reduced a letter grade for each day late. Otherwise, refer to the student handbook. Grading Content (per 9 weeks):</p><p>Flashback Friday Quizzes: 8 at 15 points each = 120 (20%) Class Presentations: 8 at 15 points each = 120 (20%) Unit Tests: 3 at 100 points each = 300 (50%) Class Project: 1 at 60 points = 60 (10%)</p><p>For updated grading and attendance information, log on to the parent portal at https://infinitecampus.kyschools.us/campus/portal/harlanindependent.jsp </p><p>This is to certify that I have read the syllabus and am aware of the course goals and objectives, the materials required daily, the tardy/absence policy and the grading policy.
