(See attachment --EAP 1261 Competencies.)</p><p>Prerequisites: EAP 1161 or equivalent proficiency.</p><p>Text: Basic English Grammar (Third Edition) by Betty S. Azar</p><p>Additional Materials Needed: Textbooks are required in this program. You also need to have a good dictionary, a notebook, pens, and #2 pencils. Ask your teacher for suggestions.</p><p>Departmental Policies: 1. Students must speak only English. 2. Students are expected to come to class on time. 3. Students are expected to attend and participate in all class discussions. 4. Homework is OBLIGATORY. 5. Students who have 3 consecutive absences without notification may be dropped from the class. 6. Students should keep up with all classroom and homework assignments. If a student misses class, it is his (her) responsibility to obtain class notes and assignments/exercises from fellow classmates (or teacher). Absence is not excuse for missed homework or tests. 7. Students’ work should be individual and original and expected to abide by all MDC proper academic conduct regulations. NO CHEATING ALLOWED! 8. There will be no make-ups for quizzes. The instructor may choose to drop your lowest grade. Make-ups for departmental tests are given only with an official excuse (i.e., note from doctor, minister, INS or court) showing the exact date and time. 9. Dropping/Adding is the student’s responsibility. Instructors may also initiate drops for no shows and non-attendance. 10. Students must pass the final examination with a minimum of 75% to be eligible to receive a passing grade for this course.</p><p>Grading: Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus ESL & Foreign Languages Department—Room 1615 EAP 1261 – Grammar Level II (Six Week Term) </p><p>Your final grade will be based on your successful completion of all assignments, quizzes, your attendance and participation in class. Late assignments will not be accepted for credit unless special permission is granted by the instructor. When you have passed the final exam, your grade for this class will be computed utilizing the following criteria:</p><p>Coursework & Quizzes: 66% Departmental Final Exam: 34%</p><p>Grading Scale: A 92-100 B 84-91 C 75-83 D 65-74 F below 65</p><p>Week 1: Introduction to course; Placement test. Chapter 1 Review </p><p>Chapter 2 Review: Using Be and Have</p><p>Chapter 3: Using the Simple Present Emphasizing the use of frequency adverbs and asking questions (3-2)</p><p>Week 2: Quiz: Chapters 2 and 3</p><p>Chapter 4: Using the Present Progressive (Focus on Sections 4-1 thru 4-5); Chapter 5: Talking About the Present (Review 5-7 thru 5-11)</p><p>Chapter 6: Nouns and Pronouns</p><p>Week 3: Chapter 7: Count and Noncount Nouns (Focus on 7-1 thru 7-5) Quiz: Chapters 4 thru 7</p><p>Chapters 8 and 9: Expressing Past Time Emphasizing WH- Questions in the Simple Past; Irregular Verbs; Past Progressive</p><p>Week 4: Finish Chapter 9 Chapter 10 and 11: Expressing Future Time (Focus on 11-1 thru 11-3 for Chapter 11) </p><p>Week 4: Verb Summary: Present, Past, and the Future (cont’d) Verb Quiz: The Simple Present, the Present Progressive, the Simple Past Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus ESL & Foreign Languages Department—Room 1615 EAP 1261 – Grammar Level II (Six Week Term) </p><p> and the Future</p><p>Chapter 12: Expressing Ability; Chapter 13: Advice, Necessity, Requests, and Suggestions Asking for Permission and requests</p><p>Week 5: Finish Chapter 13 Mini-Quiz: Modal Auxiliaries (Optional)</p><p>Chapter 15: Possessives</p><p>Week 6: Review and Departmental Final Examination</p><p>This syllabus is subject to change.</p><p>3/2006</p>
